A student of Architecture projects in the Puerto de la Cadena a center of neuromuscular diseases (09/08/2019)

The design of a medical center for neuromuscular patients is the final work with which the degree in Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Alba Miró Andreu, a sanitary equipment that would be unique in Spain and has proposed to place in the Puerto de la Cadena "because vegetation is very important to improve respiratory problems associated with many of these diseases," says the student.

In Spain there are more than 60,000 affected by any of the 150 neuromuscular diseases, which are characterized by their degenerative nature and the disability they generate due to a progressive loss of muscle strength.

“They are diseases that have a great social cost because in many occasions the relatives have to leave their jobs to attend them,†says the student, pointing out that the objective of the center would be to reduce the dependence of the patients and take care of them in the most delicate moments of their disease.

The designed medical center would have a polyclinic area for external consultations and a day center with gym, physiotherapy and rehabilitation rooms, occupational therapy and social work workshops and an “independent life laboratory in which the patient learns to do homework his day to day for himself, â€says Miró Andreu.

“A very interesting aspect of the project is the design of the users' circulations, based on two ramp systems, some exterior and other interiors, that run through the most representative spaces of the building while guaranteeing the accessibility of all people, especially those with reduced mobility â€, highlights the professor who has directed the work, Pau Natividad.

The project also includes a long-stay area for palliative care with clinical analysis laboratory, operating room, sleep unit and pharmacy.

"The hospital uses of a building do not occur in the race and are very difficult to organize," highlights the student, who chose the theme of her final work to learn from her medical sister the difficult circumstances of patients with neuromuscular diseases.
