Anticipating the performance of the solar panels, depending on the expected time, to turn on or off the biomass boiler allows to save up to 40% of the organic fuel used by pools with mixed renewable energy systems, as demonstrated by a thesis of the University Polytechnic of Cartagena (UPCT), the first that has validated an intelligent model of air conditioning management of these facilities with the actual sensorization of a heated pool, the municipality of Archena.
“In order to optimize solar utilization, we have simulated the application of an intelligent and predictive control system that is able, by knowing the weather forecast of the next day, to estimate the net thermal generation of the solar installation and influence the management of the boiler, turning it off in advance if the solar contribution during daylight hours will be sufficient to keep the pool vessel at the desired temperature ranges, ”explains the new doctor by the UPCT Jos Pablo Delgado Marn.
"The mixed system of solar panels and biomass boiler is quite common in heated pools and is the option that implies lower energy costs, so it tends to do so," adds the researcher.
However, the research also applies to swimming pools with solar thermal energy and other types of boilers, such as natural gas.
The thesis, directed by Jos Ramn Garca Cascales, started from a collaboration agreement between the UPCT and the Archena City Council.
A similar agreement has been signed with the Ceut City Council to study the energy optimization of its municipal swimming pool, closed due to its high energy cost.
"Several public pools in the Region of Murcia are closed or not inaugurated because they do not have economically sustainable air conditioning systems," says Delgado Marn.
The simulation carried out, which has saved the huge costs involved in real tests with these large air-conditioned installations, has achieved savings of more than 40% of fuel in the boiler, always maintaining the temperature of the vessel at the levels required by the regulations.
The intelligent biomass boiler control system would imply that a small processor regulates the thermal equipment of the pools with mixed renewable energy systems.
"Climate anticipation is already the trend in smart home automation to save energy," explains the author of the thesis, associate professor at UPCT.
