It was the year 2010 when, after finishing his participation in the filming of the Iranian non-animation film 'Persepolis', de Medeiros arrived in the port city to participate in the XXX edition of the Cartagena Jazz Festival and present his latest album at that time, 'Peninsulas and continents'.
Much has rained since then but Maria has not lost a bit of creativity and returns to act as a singer but also to present what was her first film as a director, 'Capitães de Abril', which also starred with Stefano Accorsi, Joaquim de Almeida and Fele Martínez.
To celebrate his visit La Mar de Cine makes a very special place in this edition, as does the musical section of the festival that will host it with the poet and musician Paulo Furtado, the rocker of Coimbra, who is behind the brand The Legendary Tigerman.
Considered today as the Portuguese actress with the greatest international projection, Medeiros is French, polyglot, smiling and never loses her expression of sweet naughty girl.
He speaks six languages and has done almost everything: he is a film actress and has participated in more than 60 films, some as remembered as 'Henry and June', 'Pulp fiction', 'Golden eggs', 'My life without me' , 'Babel' or 'Airbag', but also, she is a director, especially documentaries, has done theater, musicals and lately she has thrown into the music pool as a singer, lyricist and composer.
“I am an actress who sings and I do it with one foot in the theater and another in music.
I really like to mix the two things, â€he usually says when asked about the discipline he is most attracted to.
His music, like her, is eclectic.
De Medeiros plays fados, salsa, bossanova, jazz and even flamenco and as an actress she has forged a solid career working with filmmakers as essential in film history as Manoel de Oliveira, Quentin Tarantino or Bigas Luna.
'Capitães de Abril', which will be presented in a colloquium with the public of Cartagena, was his first feature film, the project of a lifetime in which he spent more than ten years and many efforts.
And so much work won its reward with prizes such as that of the public at the Arcachon and Cinesone festivals and the Best Film Award at the São Paulo Film Festival.
The film is set in the Portugal of Salazar, who held with iron hand one of the oldest dictatorial regimes in Europe.
It all starts when, during the night of April 24 to 25, 1974, the Portuguese radio broadcast a forbidden song, 'Grândola'.
It could be the insumission of a rebel journalist but in reality it was the trigger for a military coup d'etat that would change the face of the small neighboring country, as well as the fate of immense territories in Africa that would be freed from colonial rule.
The constant wars overseas, the political repression and the bad march of the country provoked in those days a peaceful revolution of the Portuguese leftist military.
The film tells all these facts focusing mainly on the life of Captain Salgueiro Maia.
In addition, actress María de Medeiros has indicated that she has several cinematographic projects such as "the political film, shot in Rio de Janeiro, about the last elections in Brazil, entitled 'Our children'".

In her role as singer, María de Medeiros will perform with The Legendary Tigerman at La Mar de Música this Thursday, July 25, at 9:30 p.m., in the CIM's courtyard.

An emotional show mixed with pieces of movie soundtracks, films that inspired her to be, as she says, "an actress who sings."
Finally, the singer concluded by highlighting that "she felt very happy when Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Festival in 2017" and stressed that "thanks to the Sea of Music, the vision of the new wave of Portuguese artists can be shown" , since Spain and Portugal are not "countries that turn their backs".
