The Unit of Quality of Life and Environment of the City of Cartagena, during the inspection campaign of establishments carried out in La Manga, detected on Saturday July 20 the sale of dangerous laser pointers in two bazaars of the Gran Vía, in the Puerto Urbanization Beautiful.
These laser pointers are registered in the Alert Network of AECOSAN (Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition), which prohibits their marketing and sale due to the risk of eye injuries.
If a laser of less than five milliwatts of power is aimed at someone's eye, that person can blink or look away without suffering any eye injury.
However, the natural eye protection mechanisms - such as the flicker reflex - have no effect against lasers with a lighting power of more than five milliwatts, causing serious damage to the retina, even after a momentary exposure.
After being checked by the agents, an act of confiscation of 128 laser pointers of class III, which were deposited in the premises of the Local Police, was proceeded to its destruction.
RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE USE OF LASER POINTERS
1- Never point or shine to anyone with a laser pointer.
2- Do not buy laser pointers for children.
3- Before buying a laser pointer, make sure you have the following information on the label:
a legend indicating that it complies with the provisions of Chapter 21 of the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations).
the name of the manufacturer or distributor.
the date of manufacture.
a warning that exposure to laser radiation should be avoided.
the class rank, which goes from Class I to Class IIIa.
Class IIIb and Class IV products must be used only and exclusively by people who have the appropriate training and for applications where there is a legitimate need to use these high-power products.
