Prize of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba to a project of rural electrification in which the UPCT participates (20/07/2019)

The Academy of Sciences of Cuba has recognized with the highest scientific award of the country the SURE Project promoted by the Imperial College of London and in which the UPCT participates 20.July.2019.- The professor of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena Antonio Urbina and the doctor for the doctoral program in Renewable Energies of the UPCT Lucía Serrano have participated in the PEMAR Project that has received the 2019 prize of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, the most prestigious award that is given in the country in the field scientific.

Within this project is part of the development of the 'SURE Project' ('Sustainable Rural Energy'), a multicriteria decision software, to which the researchers introduce a series of conditioning factors and factors on a specific area or population for the program to analyze the information and offer the best renewable energy solution.

"Once the software proposes a photovoltaic technology as a solution, the researchers calculate the avoided carbon dioxide thanks to its use (also taking into account the places of manufacture and installation).

In addition, we show the results for several technologies, to be able to select the one with the lowest environmental impact ", as Lucía Serrano explained to Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), where she is currently a professor.

Professor Antonio Urbina comments that "this type of project allows us to address the problem of rural electrification in a more sustainable way, and at the same time taking into account the satisfaction of the demand of the beneficiaries of the project".

During the development of the project the universities of the United Kingdom, Colombia and Cuba collaborated, including field work in Cuba in rural communities where different alternatives of rural electrification were studied taking into account the local situation, the opinion of the inhabitants and the available resources.

By analyzing all the factors comprehensively, a more durable solution is obtained over time and with less environmental impacts.

The initiative began to develop in the Imperial College of London in the year 2010.

During the time that the research work has lasted, Raúl Olalde, Taymi González and Raúl Sánchez Machado, of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Center of Agricultural Research of the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas, in Santa Clara, Cuba, participated. ;

Judith A.

Cherni, researcher at Imperial College London;

Antonio Urbina, from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena;

and Juan Felipe Henao Piza, from the ICESI University of Colombia.

"I joined the development of this software in 2011, when I was doing my thesis at the UPCT, directed by Antonio Urbina.

The objective, in addition to adding the global impacts related to the installation of technologies, was to help developing countries to do so in a sustainable and respectful way with the environment, choosing the most suitable renewable energies for each one of them. them, "said Professor Lucia Serrano.

The collaboration with the participating universities is currently maintained, and the awarding of the prize is a great recognition and a stimulus to continue working in rural electrification with renewable energies.

"At present we have extended the collaboration to Mexico, where we are working with the Autonomous University of Guerrero, in one of the poorest states and with the greatest social conflict.

The results of the experience in Cuba and now in Mexico can be extrapolated to many other countries where access to electricity for the rural population continues to be a great challenge, "says Professor Antonio Urbina.
