Andre Vicente Gonçalves is a Portuguese photographer who has specialized in travel photography, becoming very popular with his series of windows of cities in the form of collage.
A few months ago he visited Cartagena, invited by the La Mar de Músicas festival, to incorporate the port city into his project "Windows of the world".
The photos of the windows of Cartagena are part of the exhibition along with other cities such as Vienna, Phuket, Bruges, Hamburg, Venice, Amsterdam, London ... until August 30 in the exhibition hall of the Faculty of Sciences of the Company.
Almost 10 years ago, when André Vicente Gonçalves was in Erasmus in Trento (Italy), he began photographing the windows of the buildings.
Since then, when the Portuguese photographer visits a new place his camera aims at them.
Some 40 cities from 11 different countries are already part of his project, with which he wants to show that windows are more than the eyes of a house.
For him, they are also part of the history of a city.
Cartagena, now joins this project.
Gonçalves toured the streets of Cartagena, selecting and photographing the windows of the city.
Then he joined his snapshots taking into account the composition and design, to develop his collages, where he seeks to find balance between colors and shapes.
The final work is the one that is seen within the artistic section of La Mar de Músicas.
The project is not only about images of windows, it is about the architectural identity that Cartagena has, what makes it unique, something that can be seen through the windows.
Seen as a whole, the windows of a city not only give an idea of the architectural style of this, they can also mark historical periods and evidence the passage of time.
Gonçalves is an example of how practice and trying new formulas is something very necessary and positive in photography if you want to produce interesting images.
In addition to the photos of the port city, Cartagena will show the collages of the Portuguese photographer in Chauen, Phuket, Vienna, Bruges, Hamburg, Burano, Venice, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Costa Nova in Portugal, Lisbon, Bucharest and London.
This Portuguese photographer, whose background is in science, began to take an interest in photography, developing long-exposure images in spectacular natural landscapes, and then begin to approach the cities.
At first, his images did not go far from the typical tourist postcards until he began to close the planes of his images focusing on details.
Hence, his series based on windows from different cities was born.
In the choice of your photographs you usually do not choose the most beautiful windows.
Some are very strange and do not compose well with each other.
Therefore, the artist seeks to create a uniqueness and unique identity for each city or region, highlighting its history and culture.
It is a revolution for the meaning of a window that before could only be seen as a hole in the wall.
