On July 25 and 27, the beaches of Cartagena and Cabo de Palos will host a waste collection activity.
This initiative is part of the sustainability campaign of the Festival La Mar de Músicas de Cartagena that was presented this Friday, July 12.
This activity has been carried out by the Department of Culture of the City of Cartagena, Soltec, My Coast without plastics and the Association Region of Murcia Clean.
The sculpture by Fernando Sáenz de Elorrieta, consisting of a fish that eats plastics, has also been presented.
This work aims to raise awareness of the problem of the dumping of objects into the sea.
With these collection activities, the aim is to involve citizens in the care of the environment.
The delegate councilor of Culture of Cartagena, Carlos Piñana, has presented the initiatives together with the head of My Costa Sin Plásticos Rocío Fernández Caro, the representative of the Murcia Region Clean Association, Matilde Ruiz, the sculptor Fernando Sáenz de Elorrieta and the representative for Spain of Soltec Energías Renovables, Luis Hernández.
The mayor recalled that throwing plastics into the sea "not only creates a bad image, but also something that affects animals.
In short, they confuse it with food, eat it and die. "
The image that draws the problems of waste at sea is that of a fish eating plastics.
Its creator, the sculptor Fernando Sáenz de Elorrieta, claimed to feel "sensitized all his life with the remains that I have seen on the bottom of the sea" as a diver.
"They have always inspired me to do things that would increase people's awareness for this big problem that we all have."
The artist has indicated that he had this idea in mind for a long time.
Sáenz de Elorrieta says that it is important for children to know "that by feeding this fish, you do not really feed it."
The collaborators in this initiative Soltec, Mi Costa Sin Plásticos and the Murcia Region Clean Association have agreed on the importance of getting involved in the defense of the environment, so that biodiversity is protected.
It also aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact generated by events such as the La Mar de Músicas de Cartagena Festival and to try to reduce its footprint.
