Since last June, a well-known port in Cartagena has a mobile station in charge of measuring atmospheric pollutants and their environmental impact, which will be active until mid-November.

This measuring station is part of a pilot study launched between the Port Authority of Cartagena and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in view of the significant increase in cruise traffic in the Cartagena dock.

The purpose of this study is to be able to scientifically establish if there is any relationship between the levels of contamination that may exist in the city and its relationship with cruise traffic.

The study is part of a planned sampling in six weekly campaigns at different times of the year, which aims to determine and compare the concentrations of the main gaseous pollutants and estimate the concentration of particulate matter present in the Cartagena dock in different situations: when it exists and there is no cruise traffic;

at different times of the year and under different meteorological scenarios.

This preliminary study would provide baseline information to identify the main sources and polluting practices that could occur and propose concrete and effective measures to minimize impacts on the marine environment and on the city, contributing to the sustainable development of port activity.

This port is part of the United Nations Global Compact since 2011, among whose principles the care of the environment is a fundamental part, and our commitment, "says Mari Carmen Roser, Port Manager, goes through promoting initiatives that promote greater responsibility environmental".

"The study started," continues Ros Herrera, "is one of the many measures that have been developed by the Port Authority of Cartagena to know the impacts of emissions to the atmosphere, and we support any initiative of these characteristics that allow us to contribute to the protection of the optimum levels of quality of our environment ».
