We are Cartagena - Somos Region demands an urgent plan to remove asbestos from educational centers (28/06/2019)

In the municipality of Cartagena there are 34 educational centers that have asbestos, one of the components of fiber cement that is present on many roofs.

A material that after 30 years begins to degrade becoming dust harmful to health.

"At present, in the Elcano Institute and in the schools of Virgen del Carmen and José María de Lapuerta, asbestos is in direct contact with people, both students, teachers and neighbors who live near these centers."

In addition, other schools such as La Aljorra, Gabriela Mistral, Gardens, Luis Vives, Miguel de Cervantes, Our Lady of Los Dolores, San Antonio Abad, San Cristobal, San Francisco Javier, Santiago Apostle, Vicente Medina, Aníbal, Asdrúbal, La Asomada, Carthago, Mediterranean, San Isidoro, San Fulgencio, Santa Florentina, Santa Maria del Buen Aire, Antonio Ulloa, La Concepcion, Mare Nostrum, San Felix, Stella Maris or Virgen del Carmen also have asbestos.

The president of Somos Cartagena - Somos Región, Ana Belén Nicolás, has indicated that "it is not possible to consent to continue carrying out activities in these classrooms, for this reason we demand an urgent plan to remove the fiber cement from the public schools and institutes of the municipality, following criteria for deterioration, seniority, area affected and number of students affected. The Cartagena do not have enough information about the serious problem of this material, and this despite the fact that Cartagena is the municipality of Spain with the highest number of deaths from asbestos.

Nicolás, recalled that, in January 2018, the Ministry of Education confirmed that, between 2019 and 2020, the asbestos would be removed from the covers of the Isaac Peral and Juan Sebastián Elcano institutes.

"And it was the Minister of Education, Adela Martínez Cachá, who promised in 2018 that in the summer of 2019, the cover of the José María Lapuerta school sports center would be replaced, which gives off a dust that is harmful to health by hitting the balls on the roof. Now we find that nothing has been done because the Autonomous Community has postponed it to the next course, due to a budgetary mismatch This is absolutely inadmissible Can an approved work run out of budget? Citizens are fed up with so much deception and inaction on the part of politicians and we ask ourselves: Will there be a firm commitment to the health of the people of Cartagena with the removal of asbestos in the Centers or, on the contrary, will the parents of the students decide not to take their children to school? class for fear? "
