The documentary "La mujer" in Carthago Nova received the Viriato de Oro as a public prize and the Silver Viriato of the jury within the framework of the 4th Archaeological Film Festival of Castilla y León held this past Sunday June 16, whose projection was made in the Principal Theater of Zamora.
The documentary "The Woman in Carthago Nova" is a production of the Integra Foundation, under the Ministry of Finance of CARM, with a project of the Roman Theater Museum and the Research Group IURA, whose purpose was to reconstruct daily life and, in concrete, give voice to those who have been the object of forgetting over the centuries, the women of Carthago Nova.
One of the priority scenarios has been the Museum halls and the Roman theater itself, a place where Roman women participated as spectators, but who would also soon appear on stage as actresses with the appearance of mime.
Equal value are the thermal baths, the sanctuary of Isis, areas that lend themselves to exposing the issues related to "public" life.
While to address domestic life and its "private" facets, the ideal setting was the domus of Fortune whose valorization brings us closer to domestic life in Carthago Nova, thanks also to the good disposition of the entities responsible for their protection and management, such as the Cartagena Port of Cultures Consortium and the Teatro Romano Foundation.
However, the project was more ambitious, because beyond the interventions in the archaeological scenarios with interviews that touched on cultural, social or legal aspects of women in the classical world in documentary format with direct contributions, a dramatization of the life of a Roman woman with the collaboration of Domus Baebia.
The final result was an audiovisual production of about 50 minutes, divided into three chapters, which can be viewed independently or together, and which give life and voice to the women of an era.
In short, Chapter 1, entitled "Private Life", begins with the birth of a girl in the bosom of a Roman family of Carthago Nova;
From there, issues such as the possibility of acceptance of the pater families of the new member of the family or rejection are addressed.
The role of the mater families, Lucrecia, in the education of the little "Julia" and the people of different legal status who live in the family domus.
The second chapter focuses on "Moments of a Life", starting from the idea of ​​the different types of women living in a Roman city and their different daily realities, whether they are midwives, freedmen or slaves, through a narrator.
The third chapter, entitled "From Carthago Nova to the present," takes a tour of the Roman remains preserved in the city highlighting their recovery.
It also shows how that classic heritage coexists with the current city, a city that was the scene of the Second Punic War, and that for 30 years in the month of September is revived in the Feasts of Carthaginians and Romans, where they have an important role. women, like Emilia Paula's character.
The voice of one of the festeras that has played the character of Emilia Tercia joins other voices of archaeologists and managers involved in the recovery of heritage, as well as women contemporary artists who have been inspired by the Roman woman to make their works.
The official presentation of the documentary was made in Cartagena on March 16, 2018 before a large audience, was also screened in Murcia on March 22, in September of the same year in the "European Night of Researchers", organized by the University of Almería, in October at the Cultural Center of Sagunto.
In 2019 at the University of Murcia on the occasion of International Women's Day.
It was recently screened at the IV International Archaeological Film Festival of Castilla y León, where it won the Viriato de Oro prize and the Jury Prize with the Viriato de Plata.
This production has been developed within the framework of the Digital Heritage project, which is managed and coordinated by the Integra Foundation, and is financed by European FEDER funds and the General Directorate of Information Technology, Heritage and Telecommunications of the Ministry of Finance of the Autonomous Community. of the Region of Murcia.
The production was made by Antonio Alpañez of the production company by Imagia Video, and was registered in the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
'Women in Carthago Nova' has been a pioneering and interdisciplinary project in its development, a tool for connecting with the citizen who has always sought the necessary transfer of knowledge of researchers to society, the dissemination and dissemination of the ancient world as the basis of Western culture, as well as the transmission of values ​​as important as the appreciation of our cultural legacy and equality between men and women.
