The fall in unemployment in May exceeds the average decline of the last ten years in the region of Cartagena (04/06/2019)

The percentage fall in registered unemployment during the month of May 2019 in the region, standing at -4.5%, was more marked than that experienced in May 2018 (-2.4%) and clearly higher in absolute value at average percentage decrease during the months of May of the last 10 years (-1.9% for the period 2009-2018).

This same pattern is repeated in each and every one of the municipalities of the region, according to the 'Monthly Report of the Labor Market of the Region of Cartagena', prepared by the Economic Studies Department of the UPCT with the collaboration of the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC).

The study indicates that these data indicate that the month of May 2019 was "especially positive for employment in the region of Cartagena, even in the context of a month that is traditionally favorable for reducing unemployment".

And is that, adds the report, "it should be borne in mind that part of this decrease in the number of unemployed could be related to the holding of municipal and regional elections at the end of May, so we will have to wait to see if the acceleration in the creation of employment is maintained in the month of June ".

The president of COEC, Pedro Pablo Hernández, stressed that "traditionally, May is a positive month for the reduction of unemployment because it is the prelude to the summer season, on this occasion, it shows the best figures of the last 10 years, both monthly, interannual as seasonally adjusted ".

In this respect, it highlighted the year-on-year decreases in agriculture (-10.6%), in construction (10.5%) and, especially in the group without previous employment (-9.5%).

However, he showed his "concern about the year-on-year increase in the industry (+ 5.20%), a sector that is characterized by the creation of quality jobs and that knew how to resist the last economic crisis".

Likewise, Hernández highlighted the increase in the number of contracts signed in the region of Cartagena in May (+38.7%), both on the increase in hiring in May 2018 (+16.2) and on the average increase in hiring of the last ten years (+ 17.7%).

The president of COEC asked future regional and municipal governments to contribute to "the creation of a favorable framework for business growth and job creation, and accelerate strategic infrastructures for the region of Cartagena, such as the AVE, the Corridor Mediterranean, the ZAL, the water resources and the Port of El Gorguel ", among others.

As a whole, the total number of unemployed in the region of Cartagena in May 2019 stood at 26,149 people.

This means a decrease of 1,236 unemployed compared to the month of April, 4.5% less.

Unemployment decreased in May in the construction sector (-6.1%), among the unemployed without previous employment (-6.1%) and in the service sector (-5.1%).
