The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) increased the collaboration in R + D + i with companies by 48% in 2017.
This is one of the data that stands out in the II Accountability Report of the UPCT, corresponding to the year 2017-2018 and presented by the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, accompanied by the Minister of Employment, Universities, Business and Environment, Javier Celdrán and the general director of Universities, Juan Monzó.
Díaz Morcillo, who recalled that last year the UPCT was the first university in the region to present a report on accountability, said that the goal of the UPCT is to render accounts annually to society.
In this second report, the UPCT has increased the number of indicators included in the document.
"We have been able to collect more data and we are very happy because we have advanced in scientific production and transfer to companies, through applied research, advice and training of employees," he said.
For his part, the director congratulated the UPCT "for this important exercise of transparency" and for "being at the forefront in connection with the private sphere, as shown by the increase in the raising of private funds".
For Celdrán, the Polytechnic of Cartagena "is one of the most restless universities when it comes to seeking funding from the private sector and connecting with the business sector".
Regarding students, the report shows that during the 2017-2018 academic year the number of graduates in the UPCT official master's programs has increased, increasing by 9.2%.
In addition, it highlights the increase in the collection of private funds for research, development and innovation.
In 2017, this financing represented 36% of the funds obtained to carry out research projects.
Along with the above, in that period there is an upward trend in teacher quality in 89% of schools.
The teacher satisfaction is, thus, the highest of the period analyzed by the Quality Service of the UPCT that covers from 2014 to 2018.
Students of the UPCT can access a wide range of their own scholarships.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, 1,743 scholarships were awarded to students, 1,037 were granted by the Ministry of Education, which means 20.3% of the total number of undergraduate and master's students, the University granted its own scholarships for 1.1 million of euros and 170 students were trained with research grants and those of the Chair Network.
In addition, the UPCT continued adding companies to its Chair Network, in this period seven new chairs joined, Atosa, Emite, Emerson, Virgen de la Caridad Medical Center, Konery, Padilla Innova and Cefusa reaching 37 the number of chairs .
54 students were awarded scholarships and 15 prizes worth 6,250 euros were awarded.
The University has maintained the practical training of students over 12% of the students of the bachelor's and master's degrees since the 2015-2016 academic year.
The percentage of paid internships by companies has improved.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, the percentage of paid internships has increased to 50.2.
On the other hand, the University has significantly reduced its carbon footprint since 2015. Since 2016, the University has a 100% renobable energy supply, which has reduced the carbon footprint by 58% in 2017 to the year 2015.
In order to reduce the carbon footprint, the University has implemented energy efficiency measures related to the management of electricity consumption, specifically programmers are being used to avoid continued consumption outside working hours of the air conditioning system and non-essential lighting.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, the UPCT established its commitment to internationalization, consolidating the number of international students it receives and increasing the number of students from the Polytechnic who go abroad.
In terms of international mobility, the UPCT received 336 young people and sent abroad to 165, ranking among the first eleven Spanish universities with the largest presence of foreign students.
In terms of entrepreneurship, the advisory actions were increased.
In particular, 143 actions of this type were carried out with respect to the 81 that were made in the 2016-2017 period.
The venture is promoted in the UPCT from the Explorer UPCT program of Santander;
of the newly created Solvers Community, Crowdworking Carthago, Girl Power Murcia and the technology from the Cloud Incubator Hub, recognized as the best accelerator of companies according to the ranking 2017-2018 of Funcas and the Rey Juan Carlos University.
In spite of its smaller size in relation to the other Spanish polytechnic universities, the UPCT is the fifth university in obtaining of patents by professor, according to the report of the Observatory IUNE 2018, the third in amount captured for I + D by teacher professor researcher and the first in percentage of publications in magazines of the first quartile.
During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the number of events held at UPCT facilities has also increased.
Specifically, there were 638, which means 105 more than in 2016-2017.
The Polytechnic of Cartagena hosts numerous cultural and social events, exhibiting in turn the architectural heritage of the city.
