Chair of Sustainable Agriculture of the UPCT opens a plant to concentrate brine with the help of a biomass boiler (24/05/2019)

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) who are developing brine treatment systems for the Sustainable Agriculture Chair of the Campo de Cartagena have today presented their new trials with waters with twice the concentration of nitrates and salinity, and the plant of evaporation with which they will generate a concentrated by-product using the calorific contribution of a biomass boiler.

"We released clean water, in the form of steam, and we concentrated the brine by means of a biomass boiler with evaporation system by cooling tower", explained Professor Francisco Vera, coordinator of the Master of Renewable Energies, before the representatives of the Federation of Cooperativas Agrarias de Murcia (Fecoam), the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattle Ranchers (COAG) and several agricultural companies that are part of the Chair, as well as the Vice Chancellor of Research to the General Director of Environment, Antonio Luengo, as the The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has partially subsidized the installation of the plant.

The boiler feeds on almond shell to heat the brine.

In the coming months the researchers will begin to test flash evaporation systems to crystallize the brine and thus obtain a solid residue of crystallized salt and zero effluents.

Researchers are also conducting trials with waters resulting from a double osmosis, a technique used until a few years ago in the Campo de Cartagena to be able to use well water for irrigation, with double the concentration of nitrates and salinity than in the previous tests. , in which a denitrification yield of up to 97% was achieved, as detailed by researcher Carolina Díaz.

The process is carried out leaving 24 hours the water product of the osmosis in contact with pruning remains of orange and lemon trees.
