Much More May closes its tenth anniversary with its most participatory edition (22/05/2019)

Art and hospitality '|

The X Edition of the Festival of Emerging Art Much More May, organized by the Department of Culture and under the motto 'The face of the other.

Art and hospitality 'that was held throughout the municipality from May 10 until this Tuesday May 21, World Day of Cultural Diversity, concludes with the largest popular participation in its history.

"This is due to the inclusion in its program of six neighborhoods of Cartagena, which had already hosted the festival in previous editions", highlights the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, when making a first assessment of the festival, "and collaboration of various entities and NGOs that work with migrants and refugees. "

The festival has managed to make visible in the public space the critical narratives that from the world of art are being made about the crisis of the idea of hospitality and the changes in the policies of the states that restrict the rights included in international treaties.

Bridges and not walls

This idea has also been very present in the conferences and debates included in the festival in which prominent intellectuals have participated, such as Santiago Alba Rico, Javier de Lucas, Maria José Guerra and Ignacio Castro.

All of them have spoken of the need to establish bridges and not build walls -as is being done in many places- with respect to people who come to our societies due to force majeure (wars, catastrophes, etc.), and also pushed by the human desire to improve living conditions.

More specifically, Islamophobia, which is very present in our society and in our media, has been subject to analysis and criticism.

We must also highlight the direct participation of migrants in the festival's proposals, which has taken place in multiple activities, until the end of the festival coinciding with the World Day of Cultural Diversity (May 21), which has allowed to emphasize the wealth cultural that supposes for our societies the coexistence between people of so diverse origins.

High quality of interventions and works

Among the proposals that have had a better public reception, it is necessary to highlight the work (audiovisual installation) "Obertura" by the artist Angel Haro that has been seen in the ARQUA;

the urban facilities by different points of the municipality, with a remarkable presence of works of students of the School of Architecture of the UPCT;

the great murals of the artists invited by the urban culture section (One Urban World) that have been done both in the city and in the neighborhoods;

the success of the Mucha Más Música concert, which brought together hundreds of people;

the quality of the theater and dance pieces included in the Artes Vivas program;

the high level of short films selected for the Short Week, among other activities.

Another aspect to highlight this year has been the collaboration of dozens of organizations, educational centers and institutions, which show that Mucho Más Mayo is a collaborative festival that would not be understood without the cooperation of so many collective actors, from public universities (UMU, UPCT ) or Isen, to the associations and NGO of the Third Sector, going through institutes, neighborhood associations, foundations, museums, etc., as well as various departments and municipal areas (Culture, Equality, Social Services, Youth, Popular University, or Sports) .
