From 23:45 on Sunday May 19, the program "Between women" presented by Encarna Talavera will broadcast an interview with the local police officer of Cartagena, Maria del Carmen Garrido, the first local policewoman of the Region of Murcia, at a time when, for example, women were not allowed to be part of the Armed Forces, Civil Guard and National Police, since their bases contemplated that it was an indispensable requirement to be a man.
Mari Carmen, as she is known by her comrades, is 60 years old and is from Toledo, and has been with the Local Police of Cartagena since her entry in 1980: almost 40 years dedicated to this profession, "lasts at the same time How rewarding. "
Cartagena was the first municipality in the Region and the first in Spain, together with Madrid and Córdoba, which made it possible to incorporate women into local police forces, being mayor, Enrique Escudero de Castro.
Since she was a child she wanted to be a civil guard like her father, but she presented herself to the municipal police in the first convocation to which women could present themselves. Of the 75 that were presented, only she arrived at the last test of the oral examination and approved it.
Mari Carmen took possession with 22 years and the body of the Municipal Police of Madrid donated at that time a bowler hat and a black bag.
But it was not until January 2, 1981 when the presence of women in the Local Police of Cartagena obtained greater signs of normalcy, with the incorporation into the municipal armed body of 14 other women, in a promotion of 26 agents.
Many of them still patrol daily through the streets of our city.
Within the Local Police of Cartagena Mari Carmen has performed its functions in different sections such as citizen security, patrols and travel (on foot), on the crane and is currently on the 092 station.
