In the Concentration and Extermination camp of Auschwitz II, there was a section called the "Gypsy camp" where Roma people were enslaved and subjected to experiments until May 16, 1944, when about six thousand gypsy women rebelled against the Nazi genocide.
With this motive, next Thursday May 16, the new Ethnic and Sexual Diversity Unit of the Department of Equality in collaboration with the Gypsy Organizations of Cartagena, will celebrate the Day of the Romani Resistance.
The events aim to commemorate this revolt and the need to make visible, raise awareness and publicize the history of the Roma people and recognize the figures of the Roma resistance, those gypsy women whose contributions to history, art, language, folklore and music they do not appear in textbooks and are not named or recognized.
It was this Wednesday May 15 when the Councilor for Equality, David Martinez, has presented the activities that will be carried out accompanied by the representatives of the organizations, Ana Hernández by the Association of Gypsy Feminists for Diversity, and Carmen Fernández of Oudar Kaló.
"On May 16 we remind citizens that anti-Gypsyism and discrimination is the co-responsibility of each and every one of us," says the councilor. "For the first time in Cartagena, a campaign is being carried out that will have as protagonists Roma women leaders who transformed the course of History with a clear and explicit message to the whole society ".
In the Plaza del Icue, between 11.30 and 13.30 on Thursday, May 16, a space of the Department of Equality of visibility and information will be enabled and a reading of a Manifesto by both organizing associations will be made. will have the assistance of the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, as well as a musical performance.
Diversity Unit of the Department of Equality
The aim of the Diversity Unit is the recognition at the socio-political level of racial minorities and diverse identities.
Their actions around this Day of the Romani Resistance are aimed at the empowerment of Roma women, create social awareness in anti-Gypsyism and promote social cohesion through workshops and awareness campaigns and prevention.

Raise awareness in anti-gypsyism
As an initiative, the unit has launched a compass and theater course in the Barriada Virgen de la Caridad and the creation of participation groups with Roma women attending to the values, concerns and needs of the Roma community.
