Europe before the new ulises' by Javier de Lucas on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 pm, at Palacio Pedreño, headquarters of the Cajamurcia Foundation in Cartagena.
ABOUT THE TALK
The discussion on the barrier between civilization and barbarism is once again relevant in a Europe that for five years has been witnessing a bloodbath of deaths and disappearances of thousands of human beings who fail in their attempt to find a better life.
The old mandate of hospitality has been, from Homer to Kant, symbol of the red line that separates civilization and barbarism.
What has happened to us?
What explains that we live this situation in Europe.
My proposal starts from the reflections of the philosopher Francisco Jarauta about the famous motto of the conversation between Adorno and Horkheimer, "what happened to Ulysses?", As a starting point to understand the reason for this terrible bankruptcy of the old civilizing mandate of hospitality to those new Ulysses who could make the words of Song IX of the Odyssey their own.
Javier de Lucas is Professor of Philosophy of Law and Political Philosophy at the Human Rights Institute of the Universitat de València.
He has been Director of the College of Spain in Paris between 2005 and 2012 and President of CEAR (2008-2009): he belongs to numerous national and international scientific and editorial boards. He has published twenty books and more than 300 articles in national and international scientific journals.
