Open the call for students of Geology and Biology who want to investigate and learn about Victoria Cave (13/05/2019)

The selected ones will have two turns of participation: from July 15 to 28 and from July 29 to August 11 |

This Monday May 13 opens a call for the Department of Culture and Heritage of Cartagena for 10 students or recent graduates of Geology and Biology can intervene in Cueva Victoria.

7 years later, it will be possible to carry out research in this Pleistocene site located in the deputation of the Beal.

Thanks to a grant from the Autonomous Community, the City of Cartagena and the Cidaris Foundation will jointly carry out a training, conservation and excavation project in Cueva Victoria.

Those interested can send their request until May 29.

There will be two shifts to carry out the activities convened: the first will be from July 15 to 28 and the second shift will go from July 29 to August 11.

They have presented the call: the councilor of Culture and Heritage of Cartagena, David Martínez, the general director of Historical Heritage and Archeology, María del Carmen Berrocal, and the representative of the Cidaris Foundation and director of the Paleontological Museum of Elche, Ainara Aberasturi.

For the presentation of applications, interested parties must submit their Curriculum Vitae and a letter of motivation to the email address: info@cidarismpe.org

The mayor of Culture of Cartagena, David Martinez, says that this initiative "combines the paleontological intervention in the cave, the conservation of heritage, along with teaching, dissemination and revaluation of the heritage of the Beal deputation."

He wanted to highlight the professionals of the Cidaris Foundation, such as the geologist and biologist Ignacio Fierro, or the geologist, paleontologist and director of the Paleontological Museum of Elche Ainara Aberasturi.

There will also be the scientific team of Luis Gibert, son of José Gibert, who made previous excavations in Cueva Victoria.

In addition to the purposes mentioned by the Councilor for Culture for the geological and biology students who enter the call, there will also be activities for the general public.

"In short, what is intended is to continue to demonstrate the importance of this extraordinary paleontological site that we can consider for its wealth of fauna the jewel of the Pleistocene," says Councilman for Culture, David Martinez.

There will be guided tours once this field of work begins in Cueva Victoria.

The geologist, paleontologist and director of the Paleontological Museum of Elche Ainara Aberasturi believes that this field of work marks "a turning point in the management of the heritage of Cueva Victoria, since we propose a project in which we will train 10 students , fundamentally of Geology and Biology, lovers of Paleontology ".

Aberasturi emphasizes that, in addition to the training of the students, the work field object of the call seeks "the intervention of the paleontological heritage of Cueva Victoria, with the excavation, the consolidation of the elements or the preparation in situ of different elements that have been extracted at other times. "

Ainara Aberasturi considers that this is a "unique" opportunity to work on "that jewel of the Pleistocene", as the geologist and paleontologist at Cueva Victoria considers.

These activities will be complemented by theoretical training and visits to areas of geological and paleontological interest in the area.

The general director of Historical Heritage and Archeology of Cartagena, María del Carmen Berrocal, wanted to highlight the importance of Cueva Victoria.

"Normally, in any cave where 20 or 30 species of animals are found, people are satisfied.

Here (in Cueva Victoria) we have a hundred. "

In addition, it ensures that there are unique native species in Europe, with 800,000 years old.

This project is co-financed by the City of Cartagena, which provides 10,000 euros.
