Cartagena claims that members of the LGTBI collective are not considered mentally ill (09/05/2019)

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated on May 17 to commemorate the elimination of homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses by the General Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO), which had place that same day, in 1990.

Cartagena wants to join Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Barcelona, ​​Madrid, Valencia as a LGTBIQ friendly city.

For this, the City of Cartagena, through the Department of Equality, in collaboration with the collective Galactyco, have prepared a series of activities to denounce the discrimination against homosexual, bisexual and transgender people and to advance their rights in all the world.

In recent years there have been many advances in Equality that have been achieved, regulatory changes that affect transgender people, important legal advances regarding non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and others such as the right to intermarriage. of the same sex: an instrument that has granted dignity, security, protection and self-confidence to thousands of people and their families.

However, Equality has not been fully achieved.

In spite of legal recognitions, in our country there are still many cases of discrimination towards the LGTBI collective.

The Councilor for Equality of Cartagena City Council, David Martínez, stressed that "LGTBIfobia still exists in our society, in our workplaces and in our educational centers.

The majority of LGTBI youth report having suffered violence in their schools. "

In addition, he explained that "they can not build their identity or live positively their affective-sexual orientation, either because they hide it in public, or because they do not dare to recognize themselves as such."

To this day, and despite the fact that dozens of countries have legalized homosexuality after the historic decision of WHO, there are still more than 70 countries in which it is considered illegal.

About 40% of the world population lives in countries where homosexuality is persecuted.

To raise awareness and educate society on the importance of fighting against LGTBIfobia, since April 29, a campaign entitled "Live in equality, coexist in diversity.

Against LGTBfobia ', where posters are being distributed in institutes, universities, health centers, bus images, mupis to fight against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

This Saturday, May 11, in the Cafeteria Golden Tree Cafe, will take place the presentation of a photographic book, where love and sexual relationships of people of the same sex are recreated.

To reach all citizens, on May 15, at 8:00 pm, at the adult library of the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, the presentation of the book 'Pedro Zerolo.

A struggle for equality 'with the subsequent screening of a documentary.

Zerolo was a person who fought for LGTBI rights, a great activist thanks to whom great progress was made in our country and who never lost his smile.

He is still present through the Foundation that bears his name, presided over by his widower and that follows the line of work that Pedro started.

On the occasion of the Night of the Museums, on May 18, a performance entitled "The criminilization of the LGTBI collective in the world" has been organized, where the situation suffered by this group in many countries and cities will be denounced.

The activity will be from 9 pm until 1 am, at Balcones Azules street.

On behalf of the Galactyco collective, José María García, said that "we can not allow our group to be imprisoned, harassed and beaten in many countries such as Morocco, Algeria or those who are part of the United Nations."

CAMPAIGN 'CARTAGENA LGTBIQ FRIENDLY'

In total, at the moment, 13 shops, coffee shops and restaurants in Cartagena have joined this initiative where Equality and tolerance are promoted regardless of the sexual condition.

To join this campaign, ascribed, in addition to placing a sticker on their premises, must meet the following requirements, detailed by the vice president of the collective Galactyco, Mar Tornero:

Create an inclusive culture of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals in the company.

Manage LGTBI diversity in a transversal manner, creating inclusive policies.

Consider communication as a valuable tool to develop and promote an inclusive culture inside and outside the company.

Do not base inclusive policies on tolerance but on respect.

Have an immediate protocol in case of discrimination of this group.

Introduce the company's inclusive policies in the annual report of activities, generating new ones.

Show the sticker of this initiative in a visible way in the establishment or trade.

Appear in the social networks of the collective and on the website of the Council of Equality of the City of Cartagena.

Mar Turner concluded by stating that although many businesses have joined this initiative, they do not place the distinctive sticker or advertising "for fear of being discriminated against by other people."
