The 'Caminando al cole' project offers girls and boys from the municipality of Cartagena the opportunity to recover the street for their journeys on foot to go to school every day safely and accompanied by adult volunteers.
During the last months the Freeway Association Cartagena, in coordination with the Department of Education, Infrastructure and Local Police of the City of Cartagena, have begun to implement this project.
This initiative has also had the collaboration of various groups and institutions sensitized to the issue at hand.
The mayor of Education, Mercedes Garcia, said that "as a pilot experience, next Friday, May 10, the first school roads will begin in the Polygon of Santa Ana, with students of the Narval school, and in the coming dates will be incorporated also the students of the CEIP Virgen de Begoña.
For this, we are working with the teaching teams of both educational centers. "
Although the project is part of the initiative of Vía Libre Cartagena, in collaboration with the City of Cartagena, it aims to be a neighborhood project that allows the own actors of the educational community of each school to manage it in their own way.
This program aims to help improve aspects such as safety, health, socialization, education, autonomy, citizen participation, environmental development and sustainable mobility.
The basic objectives are:
1. To promote knowledge, valuation and the involvement of the population in the use of sustainable, respectful and beneficial displacement at the individual and collective level.
2. To form a population that is aware and concerned about mobility and the daily traffic problems that concern it, fostering a critical capacity in the face of urban environmental problems.
3. Achieve changes in citizenship mobility patterns and habits towards more sustainable modes of travel, increasing public awareness of pollution and consumption of energy resources caused by the irrational use of motorized vehicles in cities.
For the final implementation of 'Caminando al cole, Cartagena', multiple meetings are being held with teaching teams and AMPAs of the centers, and impact studies and children's participation in the activity, analysis of the safest routes are also being prepared. , review of signage and repainting of pedestrian crossings, as well as the training of volunteers who participate in the activity.
"Next Friday, each participating child will attend school with his safety vest.
We hope this is an enriching experience for them because it implies collaborating with a better mobility within the citizen spaces, "said the councilor.
Once the result of this pilot experience has been evaluated, the objective is to incorporate new educational centers into this program.
This project has the collaboration of the educational teams and AMPAs of the schools Narval and Virgen de Begoña, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, the FAPA, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, the Jacinto Hernández Foundation, Senda Senior or the Cartagena Excursionist Center.
