The Emerging Art Festival Much More May celebrates its tenth edition with a wide program of activities for all audiences.
It will take place from May 10 to 21, in the historic center of Cartagena and in the six neighborhoods invited this year such as Los Dolores, Santa Lucía-Los Mateos, San Antón, Concepción District, Barrio de Peral-José María Lapuerta and Barriada Virgen de la Caridad.
Under the slogan 'The face of the other: Art and hospitality', the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, along with the representative of the NGO that works with refugees and migrants, Accem, Belén Valera, the deputy director of Academic Planning, Infrastructures and Students of the Superior Technical School of Architecture and Building (ETSAE), Jaume Blancafort, the painting professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Murcia, Aurora Alcaide and the director of the office Store Cartagena of the Main Street of CaixaBank , Fernando Izquierdo, presented this morning, May 3, the poster and the training program of this festival.
The motto of this new edition reflects on:
Does art have to say against the oblivion of the other?
Can the artists from here and from outside make us reflect with their proposals on hospitality in a world that questions it, without falling into paternalism or good intentions?
Art is a powerful instrument for questioning hegemonic discourses and deconstructing dominant representations, and for imagining another possible world.
Much more May also has the identity of gender balance in the composition of the participants in its program and - since the previous year - a strong will for environmental sustainability.
Both criteria are taken into account when preparing the program, which consists of 80 projects produced by the festival itself and some of them, selected through a public call.
The councilman of Culture, David Martinez, has defined the festival as "a program of artistic interventions in the urban environment developed by creators of all creative records, using public spaces and unconventional places in the city and municipality of Cartagena. it is developed under a set of experimental processes that interrelates emerging artistic practice, work with citizenship, participation, artistic education and cultural production. "
"The way in which creation and artistic practice coexist with participatory processes, both in the neighborhoods and in the educational centers or in the workshops of the Training Laboratory, profoundly marks the identity of our festival," said David Martínez during the act.
In this year's edition, various associations and NGOs working with refugees or migrants are collaborating, such as Accem, Proyecto Abraham, Amnesty International, Cepaim, La Botica del Libro, Rascasa, Al Raso, the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Cartagena y Comarca, or the Al Fanar association, among many others, to which the Youth, Equality, Sports, and Social Services Councils (in addition to the Culture Department), the Popular University, the Refugium project of the University of Murcia and CaixaBank.
As a novelty, collaborate the School of Architecture and Building (ETSAE) of the UPCT and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Murcia.
The deputy director of Academic Planning, Infrastructures and Students of the Higher Technical School of Architecture and Building (ETSAE), Jaume Blancafort, explained that thanks to this festival "the projects of the students are taken out of paper".
On May 11, at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, students from the School of Industrial Technical Engineering of the UPCT will hold a greenpower electric vehicle exhibition, from 10 am to 2 pm.
The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Murcia also joins this cultural and artistic event.
The painting teacher, Aurora Alcaide, explained that the exhibition 'Route (Des) Humans' is about "the day to day of three immigrants (two from Senegal and one from Cote d'Ivoire) who work during the summer parking cars in La Manga del Mar Menor ".
The inauguration of the exhibition, which will take place in the Exhibition Hall of the ISEN University Center, will be Friday, May 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Aurora Alcaide will also participate in the May 9 round table on art and politics from the point of view of migratory contexts.
It will take place in the Ceremonial Hall of the Consistorial Palace, at 7:00 p.m.
Belén Valera, representative of Accem ONG, has supported the proposals that are going to be made around the refugee and has affirmed that "art is an excellent tool to bring to society the reception of refugees in a simple and profound way".
Also, he has asked that "we have to break the borders, not be afraid and attend the activities that are going to be carried out in the neighborhoods".
The director of the office Store Cartagena de la Calla Mayor of CaixaBank, Fernando Izquierdo, remarked that "they will always collaborate with the festival because they share the same essence: interculturality and social integration".
As in previous years, the festival includes several sections.
like, a Formative Laboratory, a short film show (Short Week), a mural program (One Urban World), a concert (Mucha Más Música), a section of Living Arts, a program aimed at educational centers (Arte al Centro The student festival), and a program for each of the participating neighborhoods.
The festival is extended until Tuesday May 21 to celebrate the International Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, as proclaimed by UNESCO.
The design of the poster and the program of this edition is the work of the plastic artist and designer Juan Fardo and is according to the mayor of Culture, "a conceptual look on the subject of borders, the welcome and the cracks that open up in the politics of refugees".
The event ended with the musical performance of the Koniré band, a band from Murcia, composed of 11 musicians, headlining the concert 'Mucha Más Música' at the festival.
A member of the group has explained that his music is "a combination of African, Cuban, Brazilian rhythms, that is, a music of miscegenation".
