The electoral surveys, discussion topic with Juan José García Escribano in Cartagena Piensa (03/05/2019)

The Cartagena Piensa program of the Department of Culture has organized for this Monday, May 6, at 20.00 hours in the Josefina Soria library of El Luzzy, an act to talk about electoral sociology with the co-director of the Murcian Studies Center of Public Opinion (CEMOP), the sociologist Juan José García Escribano.

The event has the collaboration of the Department of Sociology of the University of Murcia.

Many surveys are conducted throughout the year, but perhaps none are as controversial as those that attempt to predict election results.

As polling periods approach, numerous polls appear in the media that often provide contradictory results and, after the elections, it is increasingly common to observe notable deviations between predictions and actual results, a fact that generates critical attitudes on the part of citizens and a progressive loss of credibility in this type of studies.

This conference aims to explain the way in which pre-election surveys are developed, defending the idea that if they are carried out with the appropriate methodology, they can be a useful tool for prospective diagnosis and explanation of the vote as a social fact.

Juan José García Escribano has a degree in Political Science and Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid (1979), a PhD in Sociology from the University of Murcia (1997) and a Full Professor since 1999. His main research areas are Political Sociology, public opinion and the sociology of education.

He is currently Co-Director of CEMOP (Research Group on Public Opinion of the Region of Murcia).

He has participated as a researcher in more than thirty investigations.

He is the author of 19 chapters of different books, mainly related to political sociology.

He has been a member of the Social Council of the University of Murcia and secretary and Director of the Department of Sociology and Social Policy of the University of Murcia.

The presentation will be made by Jeisson Martinez Leguízamo, member of the Cartagena Thinking Group and researcher in the Department of Sociology of the University of Murcia.
