The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has fulfilled on the morning of this Friday of Dolores, festive in the city, with the tradition of the Ounce of Gold, dating from 1762, an ounce that symbolizes the contribution that gives annually the City Council from Cartagena to Santo and Real Hospital de Caridad to help the sick poor, which has amounted to 35,000 euros.
The original ounce next to the check have been deposited by Ana Belén Castejón before the main altar of the Basilica of Charity on the Great Day of the Patron, during the offertory of the Mass that has been officiated by the Bishop of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, accompanied by the auxiliary Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Cartagena, Sebastián Chico, who will be ordained on May 11.
About eleven and ten o'clock in the morning the Municipal Corporation departed from the City Hall in a gala retinue towards Charity.
There, the mayor, kneeling before the Patron, has made the offering to give an account of the year lived and beg for the neighbors who go through hardship or disease, with a special memory for farmers who suffer from lack of water for their crops.

Today, dear Virgin of Charity, prostrate before you, representing our beloved municipality, I come to give you accounts of a year of sacrifices and efforts, sorrows and joys, confrontations and encounters, in short, a year lived with intensity by all your children.
As tradition dictates, I come to beg you for protection for all our neighbors who are facing difficulties.
Allow me a special memory towards our farmers.
Intercede so that the lack of water ceases to be a serious problem for our municipality and give us enough wisdom and equity to be able to find among all a solution to avoid that year after year we depend on meteorology.
Dear mother, remember your sick children, the most disadvantaged, those who suffer from loneliness, those who do not find work, the elderly, the victims of mistreatment, those who suffer inequality and those who do not. full integration
All of them are part of our municipality and for all of them we work tirelessly.
Help us in our journey to build a better Cartagena, for which you advocate and for which you encourage us to join forces.
Dear lady, do not forget those of us who have the responsibility to represent all Cartagena.
We live in a turbulent time, adapting to the new times in which citizens demand more coherence, responsibility, understanding and dialogue.
Give us enough wisdom to comply with what they claim, to be able to listen and understand each other, to understand the real demands of our neighbors and to set aside the particular interests to prevail the generals.
Help us that hatred and discrimination have no place in our municipality, that differences serve as a link of union and not distancing, that resentments are transformed into understanding and falsehoods cease to make way for the truth.
Dear mother, your people need you today, as always, and hope to have your support and understanding in their daily walk.

THE FIRST PROCESSION OF SPAIN
The Ounce of Gold Offering has been one of the events that mark the Great Day of Cartagena, in which the processions begin and the honors are paid to the Patroness, the Virgin of Charity.
So at midnight the usual night serenade to Charity was held, and at dawn, from the vicinity of the Old Cathedral, the first procession of Spain started: the penitential Via Crucis del Cristo del Socorro, which had the participation of the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and that after, to cross the main streets of the Historical Helmet, has been picked up with the first lights of the dawn.
This afternoon will take place the popular floral offering of the neighbors of Cartagena, its neighborhoods and councils, who, dressed in the typical costume, will deposit bouquets and dance and sing before the image of the Virgin.
Also in the afternoon the Way of the Cross of the Christ of the Divine Mercy will depart from the Plaza del Lago and later, at night, the first procession will leave California from the Church of Santa Maria, the Christ of Mercy and the Virgin of the Rosary.
Holy Week will arrive at the deputation of Alumbres, where the Virgen de la Caridad will be procession tonight.
