ABOUT THE MOVIE
The Rev. Ernest Toller (Ethan Hawke), evangelical pastor and former army chaplain, still marked by the death of his son in Iraq, is a lone parish priest in a small church in upstate New York.
In his work as a priest he will meet Mary (Amanda Seyfried), a woman who has become pregnant and asks the Reverend to advise her husband, a radical ecologist.
Toller will be the couple's advisor, and will try to mediate between them, and this meeting with the environmental activist and his wife radicalizes their ideology little by little.
It will be then that Toller immerses himself in his tormented past and finds himself questioning his future and the whereabouts of redemption.
Paul Schrader (Like wild dogs, Hunting the terrorist) directs this film starring Ethan Hawke (Valerian and the city of a thousand planets), Amanda Seyfrid (Mamma Mia! Again and again), Michael Gaston (The Leftovers), Victoria Hill (Macbeth) and Cedric the Entertainer (Did it have to be him?).
In the words of the director "... this film is different from everything I have ever done, since it is more in the line of Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson or Andrei Tarkovsky."
