MC celebrates that the pressure of associations and groups has made possible the declaration as BIC of the surroundings of Monte Miral (22/03/2019)

The Official Bulletin of the Region has published today, March 22, the declaration as Cultural Interest Asset (BIC), with category of historical site, of the surroundings of Monte Miral.

In February 2017, the procedure for the declaration as BIC of Monte Miral was initiated thanks to the commitment of associations and collectives such as the Monte Miral Association, Daphne and, in a special way, the defender of the Cartagena heritage and responsible for MC in this Matter, María Dolores Ruiz.

The Monte Miral or Cabezo de San Ginés is one of the symbols of the natural and cultural history of the Campo de Cartagena, of great patrimonial value, encompassing "paleontological, archaeological and witness to medieval, modern and contemporary history".

The elements that have received protection as BIC within the framework of this declaration are: Cueva Victoria, a unique site in the Iberian Peninsula, where paleontological remains from the Pleistocene epoch that inhabited the Mar Menor area some 900,000 years ago can be found years;

the archaeological sites of Monte Miral and Roman times;

the mining operations and the remains of real estate located on the surface and linked to these operations on the Monte Miral or Cerro de San Ginés, as well as the hermitages on the Monte Miral.

As an intangible asset, the protection of the Pilgrimage of San Ginés, a ritual that has always had the backing of MC, is also included and, to be included in this declaration, it has had the contribution of the Monte Miral and Daphne Association.

After hearing this news, the councilor of MC Cartagena, Ricardo Segado, said that "from MC we celebrate that, finally, and after decades of abandonment and pillage, protect the entire environment of Monte Miral, also called Cabezo de San Ginés de the Jara ".

Segado has acknowledged that "associations such as Daphne, the San Ginés Pilgrimage itself, which is included within the scope of protection as intangible property, or that of Monte Miral, have pressed at all times for this declaration to come to fruition. therefore, we can only thank the valuable selfless and altruistic work of these groups ".

Likewise, the mayor of Cartagena recalled that "our passage through the government meant putting the heritage of Cartagena back in the top line, we have worked to seek prosperity and future for the Monastery itself, at Cueva Victoria, also protected by the declaration published today. in the Official Gazette of the Region, and we have supported from the first day of the Pilgrimage, a ritual that intends to pay tribute annually to San Ginés de la Jara. "

Regarding Cueva Victoria, it should be noted that its recovery is one of the yearnings most demanded by MC in recent years.

In this line, the Cartagena training promoted, among other initiatives, the realization of conditioning work, guided visits to the site and the organization of the exhibition 'Out of Africa', in the Municipal Archaeological Museum, where dozens of fossils found in the deposit throughout the last decades.

In this regard, he reiterated that, starting next May, "our commitment to the future will be the same, to fight to protect, recover, value and preserve each and every one of the heritage elements of our three-year history." .
