The Municipal Archive of Cartagena has chosen as document of the month of March a project of construction and putting into public space a monument in honor of the discoverer Christopher Columbus.
In addition, a piece made during the stay of the chess player Gari Kaspárov at the Las Mimosas Hotel in La Manga Club has been selected as video of the month.
In relation to the monument to Christopher Columbus, the Spanish Government, for a Royal Order given in 1882, intends to erect a statue in the Military Arsenal.
The work will be executed by the artist Juan Sanmartín y Serra, a native of Santiago de Compostela.
Curiously, it was made in Genoa, with white marble from Carrara, and transported to Marseille in a French steamer.
It arrived from the French port until here in a Spanish steam.
The Ministry of the Navy gave it to the City of Cartagena, being deposited in the Arsenal and then locked in Misericordia, until finally it was located in its current location in 1921. "The truth is that it is not a work of great quality, but it seems reasonable that a seafaring city has this memory to one of the most illustrious sailors, even if it is a monument that goes unnoticed. The video of the month, collected from the documentary collection of Tele Cartagena, dates from 1990. It shows the chess player Gari Kaspárov preparing himself in La Manga Club for the World Championship.
Kasparov was staying at Hotel Las Mimosas to prepare the appointment against Karpov.
