"Doing the thesis as a mother is very hard, but also very satisfying and the children live it with enthusiasm" (08/03/2019)

"Doing the thesis as a mother is very hard, but also very satisfying and the children live it with enthusiasm"

They reconcile R & D and upbringing.

Lola Ojados and Ana Vanessa Caparrós, both from the Technological Research Support Service (SAIT) of the Polytechnic of Cartagena, finished their doctoral thesis a few months ago, while Adela Ramos, member of the UPCT project I want to be an engineer, is in full doctoral research.

All three are mothers and, on the occasion of International Women's Day, have reflected together on the causes that cause gender gaps and the difficulties that doctoral candidates have with children.

Ana Vanesa Caparrós: While doing the thesis I had to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to move forward with the work and to have everything ready when the children wake up.

And at night I fell asleep in my arms while reviewing the data of the trials.

The last two years were especially intense and the same week that I had the defense of the thesis was also the communion of my daughter.

But when you finish the thesis you feel a very great satisfaction and your children also live it with enthusiasm.

Lola Ojados: I came to the laboratory at 5 in the morning on weekends and came back home to have breakfast with them.

And I take my daughter to the congresses, because otherwise I would not enjoy vacations with her.

In return, he has learned before that the rest of his class to handle Power Point, but still leaves notes 'mom works too much'.

Lola: At the University we have flexible hours, but it also has a price.

What you do not do in one schedule, you have to do in another.

I can take my daughter to school, but I'm not in the afternoon to go with her to the park. "

And when is the time to dedicate less time to children?

Because older people also have needs and require attention, even if it is not so obvious.

Differentiated roles

Ana: With the children we also have to fight the stereotypes and the differentiation of roles they do, in which they see you as the axis of the family, so that they do not ask you to do the thesis or to understand that we all have the right to do sports .

This year, for the first time, I managed to go dancing two hours a week "

Adela Ramos: I have learned to get out of the way sometimes, so that my family is not so dependent on me.

Ana: They must assume that you are not a worse mother because you are not always solving their lives "

Lola: Our generation is still programmed for that, for patriarchal and macho education, so we often can not even choose.

My mother was my reference, because I fixed everything without any need, whether it was a breakdown at home or in the car, I managed. And now that's the role I play, even if I do not want to "

Adela: We can also reeducate ourselves.

Ana: At home more and more responsibilities are shared, but in my house I am the one that I have to lead, even though my partner helps me a lot "

Adela: It is not help, it is co-responsibility and coordination that is needed.

Ana: Yes, but in practice you need me to tell you what I have to do.

Labor gap

Adela: When I worked in the private company I saw that I had to go home, because the babysitter was leaving, and my fellow men could stay for more hours and make merits to ascend.

You have to decide and it rages, because you would like to be there, because you know you deserve it.

In the end I opted to quit my job in order to do the thesis and spend more time with my children.

Lola: Something is always renounced and not everything is recoverable.

When Candela was born, I had two teenagers and my mother was very sick, so I took six months of leave and it took me years to recover what I would have got if I had not left.

It is a penalty that they do not have and the result is that few women arrive at management positions without giving up their family.

Adela: When I see the women who disappear from the labor market at 30, I think: are we stupid?

The message to young women should be: go ahead, do not give up.

Because the wage gap is a fact.

Lola: Fortunately, we are in a moment, after 8M last year, of a lot of awareness to move towards equality, although there is still much to be done.
