The purple formation remembers that the last Plenary approved a proposal of its group just to elaborate a municipal protocol before episodes like the one of last Wednesday, and that the Local Government, in spite of being able to do many things, insists on ignoring the problem of quality of the air that there is in Cartagena.
After being informed that the General Directorate of the Environment has communicated on the 6th of another episode of air pollution of "causes still unknown", the municipal group of PODEMOS has requested clarification of the reasons for this episode, that the population in a rigorous way and in real time and, above all, that the necessary measures are taken so that events like these do not become the bread of every day.
Pilar Marcos, spokesperson for PODEMOS in the City Council, said: "It is particularly curious that we do not know the causes of these episodes despite being located in the two industrial foci of the municipality2E We have been insisting for four years on this, and the Government is still installed in Negationism: neither does the Air Quality Board convene, nor does it reinforce environmental personnel, nor does it ask CARM for a true network of measuring stations, nor does it establish the protocol we proposed and approved last Plenary, a protocol that, following the example of Murcia and other municipalities, aims to regulate and mitigate this type of episodes. "
From the purple formation they have remembered that the atmospheric contamination in Spain generates 10.000 annual deaths in Spain.
That 15.5 million people live in places that exceed the recommended minimum levels of pollution.
And that Cartagena, for obvious reasons, is part of that reality.
In this regard, the mayor of PODEMOS remarked: This is not only a health and environmental problem, but also a quality of life issue, urbanism, economy.
It is urgent that we reconsider the model of the municipality that we have, and for that we need a courageous and determined government, that really commits to cheap and efficient public transport, the expansion of green areas, bike paths and pedestrianization of streets, regulation of cruise tourism, the prohibition of glyphosate or the mitigation of industrial emissions.
However, they regret from PODEMOS, none of this has been done over these four years.
