The income of the local athletes will go to ASIDO Cartagena and Enfants du Parais de Tangier |
The adventure begins for the members of the Cartagena Panda Racing Team.
The eight pilots of this team from Cartagena left on Thursday March 7 to Morocco to participate in the Panda Raid.
An amateur long-distance race that takes place annually in March, during a week, in the Moroccan desert.
The main feature of this rally is that the drivers use only old Fiat and Seat Panda cars.
In addition, it is done for a charitable purpose: everything collected by this team will go to two associations of Down Syndrome: ASIDO Cartagena and Enfants du Paradis, from Tangier.
The starting point of his itinerary has been the Town Hall.
The councilman of Culture, Tourism and Youth of the City of Cartagena, David Martinez, who has assisted at the departure of the pilots, highlighted "that exchange between two associations, which I believe is a good relationship.
That it is not just a race and that they go from Cartagena to there to promote our city, but they have also done a very nice and supportive thing ".
Martinez also affirmed that it is a different way of doing sports and a good representation for the city of Cartagena.
The president of the Cartagena Panda Racing Team, Agustín García Huertas, considered, for his part, that it is "a pride" to represent the city and two associations of people with Down syndrome.
"We're going with a lot of nerves, it's the first time we're going.
To come and enjoy the experience for us is enough. "
The Cartagena Panda Racing Team will be among the 480 participants in the Panda Raid from all over the world.
The president of the entity, Agustín García Huertas, affirms that there are seven stages, of more than 300 kilometers each.
"We crossed Morocco from north to south and from east to west.
There will be a lot of sand track, dry river, and climatic conditions typical of a desert. "
All the cars with which the Cartagena team participates are prior to 2003. Its president, Agustín García Huertas, said that "the navigation we carry is by compass.
The book of races is like that of the old ones, and so we have to navigate ".
The vehicles have been technically conditioning for the test for some time.
García Huertas has also highlighted the solidarity value of the activity.
"As a sports project it was very clear, but we wanted to go one step further.
We wanted this not to be a whim of ours.
We wanted to give it a solidarity side.
In our association we have a partner who has a child with Down syndrome.
That's why we're going to collaborate with this association. "
Everything collected by the team will go to two associations of people with Down Syndrome: Enfants du Paradis, from Tangier, and ASIDO Cartagena.
The president of ASIDO Cartagena, Juan Pedro Sánchez Bernal, wanted to thank the donation of funds for Cartagena Panda Racing Team.
"The funds are destined for different services that are provided from ASIDO: early attention, support in the schools.
We also want to thank them for the visibility they give us from this race. "
