City Council and Development agree on the recovery of the Roman Amphitheater (02/03/2019)

The City of Cartagena and the Ministry of Development have agreed on a protocol in which they set a framework of collaboration between both administrations to develop the necessary actions in order to carry out the process that culminates with the recovery and effective valorisation of the Amphitheater from Cartagena.

The protocol that was signed this morning at the Town Hall by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and the Secretary of State, Pedro Saura, establishes that the City Council will draft the project, hire the facultative direction and process the pertinent authorizations of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Autonomous Community.

For its part, the Ministry of Development is committed to contracting, executing and financing the work, for which it has a planned departure of one million euros.

The protocol also establishes the creation of a monitoring commission formed by both parties and has a term of validity of four years, extendable by four others if the parties agree.

The mayor recalled that a few weeks ago presented the Master Plan of the Amphitheater that included a comprehensive action on the site and especially its surroundings.

"The agreement that we signed today would allow us to finish phase 2 and execute 3 and 4. Specifically, phase 2 corresponds to the southern quadrant, from where we have finished up to the Autopsy Pavilion, which would allow us to recover the maritime façade". explained the mayor.

This involves the excavation and consolidation of the part of the amphitheater located below the aforementioned area.

Consolidation phases 3 and 4 correspond to the cutting area of Gisbert street.

There it is proposed to proceed with the controlled and sectorized demolition of the northwest wall of the Plaza de Toros, which is in a state of very advanced degradation and, "if appropriate, will redo its morphology and material qualities provided that the archaeological data do not offer reasonable results, "said the mayor.

Castejón has also specified that "each phase will be accompanied by the corresponding phases of archaeological excavation and consolidation of the amphitheater."

Finally, he assured that "the recovery of these areas would allow us to open the site to visitors while continuing to work on the rest of the ring."
