"It is not just a commemoration, but an opportunity for the municipalities to defend and defend a vital infrastructure for the Region of Murcia and that today is questioned by the central government of Pedro Sanchez," said the spokesman of Cs Cartagena, Manuel Padín
"With our initiative in the Plenary we are giving an opportunity to the PSOE of Cartagena to demonstrate that it does not share the lukewarm position of its party at a national level with respect to the Tajo-Segura transfer", said today the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, who has informed that Cs will defend tomorrow a motion for the local Executive to contact as soon as possible with the Union of Irrigators Tajo Segura (SCRATS) to install on the facade of the Town Hall, in the Administrative Building of San Miguel, or in any other space of municipal ownership, the commemorative poster of the Union of Irrigators for the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Transfer, and to inform of how it can participate in other events.
The Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct sent three months ago a letter to all the municipalities of the Region of Murcia requesting their participation in the commemorative events, "as far as we know, to this day the PSOE of Cartagena not even he has bothered to answer this request from our irrigators ", complains Padin who does not understand" this indifference, at least they deserved an answer ".
"Apparently, the predisposition of the PSOE is to vote against our motion with the pilgrim excuse that you can not place the banner in a protected well as the Palace Hall, (the same that is decorated at Christmas) which is absurd because in the motion we indicate that it can also be placed in the San Miguel Building or any other space of municipal ownership that represents the Consistory, "reports Manuel Padín
All the consistories have responded to the request and most have joined a campaign that, "not only reduces the placement of a banner on a municipal facade, but the transfer of municipal spaces to SCRATS to explain to society the importance of the transfer, and the situation in which it is at this moment ".
Citizens have previously registered a request for the City Council to collaborate, "it was a simple plea because at that time we could not suspect that the PSOE of Cartagena, which has boasted so many times of its support to the irrigators, would refuse to give its support to the anniversary;
but we were wrong and therefore, unfortunately, it is necessary to force a vote and force them to do so ".
The Tajo-Segura transfer generates 110,000 direct jobs each year, mainly in the agricultural sector, and around 30,000 more induced in the industrial and transport sector in the provinces of Alicante, Murcia and a part of Almeria, every year to drink around of 2 million inhabitants and irrigates 126,000 hectares of crops, as recently published by the Water Institute of the University of Alicante (UA).
In addition, without the transfers there would be no ecological flow of the Segura river and it would overexploit the aquifers.
Municipalities such as Murcia, Lorca, Archena, Torres de Cotillas, San Pedro del Pinatar, Blanca, Albudeite Abanilla, or Benejúzar, Beneferri and Elche in Alicante have already hung the anniversary banner and held events.
