The Chair Transfer and Sustainability José Manuel Claver Valderas of the UPCT will open a new line of research through which will make a carbon balance of the irrigable areas associated with the Tajo-Segura transfer.
Through this, it will evaluate the role of irrigated crops as sinks for greenhouse gases, responsible for global warming.
In addition, through the chair will participate on May 8 in the day to be held at the Institute of Engineering of Spain for the 40th anniversary of the Tajo-Segura transfer.
It will analyze the engineering of the transfer, the hydrological regime of the Tagus River and the transfer, including the affection for climate change, and the economic, social and environmental impact of the transfer.
For this, experts of recognized prestige in the field will participate.
The Chair is carrying out various research activities such as the experimental trial with different treatments of desalinated seawater in citrus fruits compared to the water supplied by the Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena.
This activity, directed by José F. Maestre, has the collaboration of three students of the UPCT awarded by this Chair.
The research project was launched by the Chair in the summer of 2017, and continues with funding from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.
This line of research aims to provide the necessary agronomic knowledge to optimize irrigation with desalinated seawater.
The representatives of the chair have met to review and assess the activities developed during the last year.
