La Palma is celebrating holidays from Saturday, February 23.
This Cartagena deputation honors its patron, Santa Florentina, until next March 14.
The kick-off of the festivities took place this Saturday with the proclamation pronounced by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón.
The party tent of the vineyard of La Palma was dressed up to start the most special days for the people of Palma.
Futsal player Mayte Mateo was also named Palmesana of the year.
The first mayor was thrilled during his speech, as he recalled his experiences of youth in the festivities of La Palma.
"Being a girl, and not so young, there have been many evenings that I have enjoyed at your parties because, like you, I love our land, to which I feel deeply rooted, and I am passionate about our traditions."
Ana Belén Castejón, recited a trovo of maestro Marín, a resident of La Palma.
"When I am in the grave, if they call me to sing, to want to get up, dead, I will try."
With these verses, Castejón wanted to pay homage to the King of Trovo, "clear example of the art you have in this land of great men and women," says the first mayor, who has set the example of the Trovero Marin Association.
In addition, the mayor of Cartagena affirms that not only in this discipline do the inhabitants of La Palma stand out, but also in the one of the bolillo.
Ana Belén Castejón has highlighted the work carried out by the Santa Florentina Association, organizer of a National Encounter of lace makers that the mayor of Cartagena defines as "unavoidable appointment for lace makers from all over Spain."
Castejón has also remembered his La Comedias Contest as La Palma's cultural reference.
"I'm passionate about theater and, whenever my responsibilities allow me, I enjoy your magnificent contest."
The first mayor also wanted to remember the activities of choirs and dances performed in La Palma.
Ana Belén Castejón wanted to remember the figure of Florita Moreno, first president of the group of choirs and dances of this Cartagena deputation, which has become the City of Cartagena Folk Group, which according to the mayor "takes our dances and our music throughout the National territory".
Ana Belén Castejón announced during the proclamation that she asked the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia to declare the La Palma Floral Games of tourist interest, but, according to the mayor of Cartagena, "they have refused".
Even so, the first mayor assures that she will continue fighting for it.
"Those who know me know that I am a strong and fighting woman and I will continue to vindicate it because, as I said at the beginning, our traditions are fundamental to consolidate our identity as a municipality and your floral games are a decisive part of it".
The mayor of Cartagena has also highlighted the "sporting capacity" of the people of Palma, since Mayte Mateo, recent European champion of indoor soccer with the Spanish national team, is from La Palma.
In addition, he recalled the Martos family, "pioneers in the promotion of cycling in our land."
Castejón has praised the virtues of La Palma during the opening speech to the parties in honor of Santa Florentina.
"This town shines with its own light and that has only been possible thanks to a perfect combination of the richness and beauty of the land, together with the creativity and perseverance of its people."
