The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) will study the geological and vegetal composition of the ravines of Casrrasquilla, Beal and Ponce to know which species can grow there and stop the arrival of heavy metals in the Mar Menor.
This is a pioneering research carried out by a specialized team from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena that has taken these three channels as a sample, although the objective is to apply the results in other areas of the Campo de Cartagena.
One of the environmental pressures identified on the coastal lagoon of the Mar Menor is the chemical contamination coming from the old mining operations in its surroundings.
The heavy metals deposited in these zones are persistent and non-biodegradable.
However, it has been shown that revegetation with selected species leads to an increase in the fecundity of these sites and finally allows the arrival of other plants, which can lead to the complete rehabilitation of the affected ecosystems.
Therefore, the CHS will study the chemical composition of waste, sediments and plants in the selected wadis and will use the results obtained to know which plant species are the most adequate to recover each channel.
