The founding shroud of the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Resurrected was presented yesterday, after a restoration intervention that has been carried out for 7 months in the Gaia Restoration Center of Valencia.
The restorer Eva Montesinos was in charge of giving a lecture about the treatment that has been done in the piece.
She was also accompanied by Susana Díez, who has been the director of the restoration.
In his talk, Montesinos spoke about the founding shroud, work of the Cartagena painter Vicente Ros, which has been described as "a jewel of modernist style", which marks the starting point of the character that at first would characterize the Confraternity of the Risen One.
That is why it is considered a work of incalculable value, which must be treated as such.
In fact, the design of the piece deserves to be analyzed carefully, since many similarities with details present in the Kamarrupa series of this painter are appreciated.
In the process of intervention, first, the materials used for its execution were studied: the outer fabric is similar to a silk rayon, in which the fibers become more synthetic.
The painting is in oil, from which it could be observed that the oil was in very bad conditions so it was necessary to work with extreme delicacy so as not to lose pictorial surface.
The reinforcing fabric is made of cotton.
The cleaning of the textiles was a big problem, since the pictorial surface was unstable, it had to be done very carefully, using gels to protect the paint.
After cleaning the piece, it was joined again, adding protection between both sides so that in the future no possible stains are transferred, likewise, a new ribbon was added to support the fringes and a new fiber rod of glass.
And after the assembly glycerin was applied to return elasticity to the tissue, loss over the years.
Finally, the specialist offered some guidelines to know how to pamper this jewel of the heritage of the Confraternity of the Risen, as well as advised on the future exhibition support in which the shroud will be kept.
