Some thirty attendees attended this past Wednesday, February 6, the first of the three workshops 'Build your neighborhood' that will take place throughout this month of February in the neighborhood of San Antón, organized by the Department of Culture within the project Cartagena Think.
The first activity was developed as a Jane Jacobs walk, an event inspired by the activist that bears her name, which consists of walking the neighborhood and discovering among all the neighbors the diversity and complexity of the environment, through shared observation.
These Jane's Walks want to acknowledge the legacy of the ideas of this urban activist and writer, who defended the design and construction of cities centered on its inhabitants.
"Knowing my neighborhood, a Jane Jacobs walk through the neighborhood of San Antón" was the first of three proposals of these workshops taught by the architect Mar Melgarejo, they intend to involve the inhabitants of the neighborhood to participate in the best knowledge and design of a more livable neighborhood according to your preferences.
The walk through the neighborhood allowed participants to walk in contact with the environment, generating many complicities, and great discussions among all.
The group walked through the main streets, and stopped in front of such emblematic spaces as the Church Square, the casino, the site of the Red Cross or the old prison.
It also served as preliminary material for the following workshops, since it was possible to analyze, diagnose, detect problems, deficiencies and critical points, such as the need for public spaces, the deterioration of many places, the loss of commercial activity, the abandonment of land and buildings, and the common feeling that there are many things that can be done in this historic neighborhood of the city.
The next appointment will be this Wednesday, February 13, at 5:30 pm at the Casino, where the workshop "Building my neighborhood, participating to improve San Antón" will be held where measures can be proposed to solve the problems detected, working with the power of the group and their first-person knowledge of the needs of the neighborhood.
The last session of this workshop will be on Wednesday, February 20 at 5:30 pm at the Casino, This time the proposal will be "Imagining my neighborhood, participating to propose the future of San Antón" in which participants will have the opportunity to express how they would like it to be their neighborhood and explain it in writing, with a public exhibition and a subsequent delivery to the administration so that future interventions contemplate the wishes of the neighbors.
