- "If the difficulties that women have in accessing employment under equal conditions do not bet in a natural proportion for the professionals of the future, an important problem for this country is looming, this is something that already worries the academic and business world, and should worry the politician, "explains the local spokesman of Cs Cartagena
- The program "I want to be an engineer" organized by the UPCT and the Secretary of State for Equality has been a success, "but it must also be a cardinal point that should guide the Spanish town halls"
Cartagena, Sunday, February 10.
Citizens will defend in the next ordinary plenary the creation of municipal STEAM spaces with talks and workshops in collaboration with the UPCT, ISEN, or CEEIC among other related entities, "to promote and awaken interest in these subjects at an early age, and in as far as possible, making women visible and valued so that their decisions are not conditioned by sexist stereotypes, "said the spokesperson for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, who understands that" if the difficulties they have to access the quality employment on equal terms do not bet in a natural proportion for the professionals of the future, an important problem for this country is approaching, this is something that already worries the academic and business world, and should worry the politician ".
For Manuel Padín, 'The program I want to be an engineer' organized by the UPCT and the Secretary of State for Equality has been a success, but it should also be a cardinal point that should guide the Spanish town halls. "
The orange training recalls that the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) recently presented the results of a study on scientific vocations in which the impact of dissemination actions was measured in terms of promotion of scientific-technological vocations.
The study concluded that after participating in activities, 5.63% of students showed more interest in studying Steam subjects and that in the case of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the number increased to 9.5%.
"One of the conclusions of this study worried us in CS because the actions failed to impact both girls and boys, so we believe it is important to include the gender perspective in the programs carried out by the City of Cartagena if we manage to take our proposal forward, "said Manuel Padín.
Citizens also believes it is necessary to create a work platform in which different educational agents, companies, social agents and public administrations participate to coordinate the STEAM promotion work.
Get more out of the municipal laboratory
On the other hand, the orange training believes that it is essential to make available to public groups the public resources of underused municipal laboratories on some dates, the creation of manufacturing laboratories (FabLab), the training of coordinators to encourage the use of these resources, and those that exist in schools after an agreement with the Community, "all that is within our reach," says Padin who asks that the Community be urged to provide materials and teaching resources that implement active classroom methodologies in the classroom. STEAM and establish alliances with other institutions, educational or strategic of our environment "that help to enhance the objectives of this area of knowledge".
One of the strategic objectives of Citizens in Cartagena is to encourage research, technology and science among young people from Cartagena, with special attention to women who, despite the competence shown in the educational curricula, do not opt for studying scientific careers, "a an anomaly that we are willing to correct, "says Cs local spokesman Manuel Padín, who recalled that" among our proposals for the Strategic Employment Plan we include STEAM programs.
"Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see how the municipal plans end up forgotten, betrayed and accumulating dust in some dark corner of the City Council so it is often necessary to push them through a specific initiative," said the orange spokesman.
