This Sunday, February 10, will be held for the third consecutive year a tribute as a souvenir of the more than 2,275 people who died on their journey through the Mediterranean and other migratory routes during the year 2018 called by Círculo de Silencio de Cartagena.
The event, which will begin at 12 noon on the esplanade of the Port, next to the old Racing Club, will be attended by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, as well as the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García.
According to the data of the UN agency for Refugees, despite a significant decrease in the number of arrivals of migrants and refugees to the European coasts, last year 2,275 people died in the crossing, with an average of 6 people per day .
Of these, 777 were destined for Spain, which means that in a single year the deceased have quadrupled to our country.
Spain leads the number of entries to the continent in this way for the first time in recent years.
The report of the UN Agency for Refugees "Desperate Travesías" analyzes the evolution of the movements of migrants and refugees who tried to reach Europe through the Mediterranean during the last twelve months and stresses that the reduction of rescue operations has consolidated to this maritime route as the deadliest in the world.
After the large number of arrivals by sea in the final part of 2018, UNHCR indicates that Spain will probably continue to be the main point of entry to Europe during 2019.
This concentration puts the closure to the Solidarity Days "Here we only want to be human", which since February 1 have been held in the city sponsored by Círculo de Silencio de Cartagena, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services, as well as other entities such as the University of Murcia and its Department of Sociology in the Refugio project, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Friends of Ritsona, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, ACCEM, and Open Arms.
All of them have been part of the Cartagena Piensa programming.
