The recovery of the Roman Amphitheater is estimated to be completed in 4 years according to the Master Plan (01/02/2019)

The main phases and objectives of the restoration of the area have been explained |

The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, has appeared in the Reception Hall of the Consistorial Palace in the presentation of the Master Plan of the Roman Amphitheater with Andrés Cánovas, one of the responsible architects.

The event, which took place at 11:30 this Friday, the 31st, was attended by the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, as well as representatives of the other political groups.

The document, which has been prepared under the tutelage of the City of Cartagena, focuses on the recovery and restoration of the Roman Amphitheater, an area that is considered to be of Cultural Interest.

This site is surrounded by a large rectangular square still to be developed and limited by two monumental buildings of the eighteenth century, which now belong to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

Due to these urbanistic singularities and before the necessary recovery of the Amphitheater, this Master Plan collects all the documentation on the site, makes a diagnosis of its status and prepares proposals for necessary actions for the protection and restoration of the Amphitheater and its surroundings.

It has also been taken into account that archaeological and architectural performances must be compatible with the urban landscape.

"This document has great technical value, but it is also an unequivocal sign that this Government wants and is going to recover the Roman Amphitheater", declared the mayor, since the project has been presented to the subsidy of 1.5% cultural of the Ministry of Development, with the mechanical criteria of the sector already consolidated.

It is estimated that the main restoration actions of the Amphitheater and the Bullring are completed in 4 years, although this time interval depends directly on the excavations and restorations of each phase.

The Master Plan was delivered at the end of 2018. Its authors have been a multidisciplinary team formed by the architects: Amann, Cánovas and Maruri, from the company Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos SLP, together with the archaeologist Francisco Fernández Matallana, technical director of the excavations of the Amphitheater Roman, and with the advice of Mari Carmen Berrocal, Coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage of the City Council, who is also the scientific director of the Amphitheater Project.

The plan also includes actions for the public, cultural and tourist use of the amphitheater, the interior of the double wall of the Plaza de Toros and the Autopsy Pavilion, as well as the construction of open spaces such as the esplanade, the construction of complementary buildings for use civic-cultural and the adaptation of the walls of the Plaza de Toros.

On the other hand, the last phases contemplate alternatives to the parking problem of the citizens related to the University, analyzing the possibility of the construction of an underground parking or the creation of a parking deterrent in the urban limits close to this area.
