Cs gets the support of the Plenary to urge the State to declare El Gorguel as a national strategic project (31/01/2019)

- "If the required protection and compensation plans are established and permits are obtained from the Ministry of the Environment and the European Commission, our obligation is to bet on El Gorguel because, if viable, there is no other strategic project more important at this time for Spain. and the Region of Murcia, we are talking about a radical transformation of our socioeconomic profile with tens of thousands of associated jobs and annual benefits of almost 300 million euros ", has defended the spokesman of the Orange formation, Manuel Padín

Cartagena, Thursday, January 31st.

Citizens today called for the Cartagena Plenary to ratify its commitment to the project for the construction of a container basin in the El Gorguel cove, "which would be a historic socioeconomic revulsive for Cartagena and the Region of Murcia," he said during the plenary session the spokesman of Cs Cartagena, Manuel Padín.

Specifically, the orange training has requested that the Government of Spain be urged to make the declaration of the National Strategic Project for compelling reasons of public interest of the first order, as a previous step to obtain the permits and environmental authorizations that are necessary to carry out the works.

The motion has been approved with the votes of PP, MC and Citizens, the abstention of the PSOE, and the vote against Podemos.

"If the required protection and compensation plans are established and permits are obtained from the Ministry of the Environment and the European Commission, our obligation is to bet on El Gorguel because, if viable, there is no other strategic project more important at this time for Spain and the Region of Murcia, we are talking about a radical transformation of our socioeconomic profile with tens of thousands of associated jobs and annual benefits of almost 300 million euros ", explained the spokesman of Cs Cartagena who reports that at this moment" they pass by for our coasts more than one hundred million containers, the possibilities of the project, considered as the most productive investment possible for the Region, are too positive not to try. "

There are many voices that, after announcing the commitment to develop the expansion of the dock of Escombreras and the plans of the Port of Valencia to install a dry port in the Community, have said that this will damage the great project of the dock of El Gorguel .

Citizens has described in the Plenary as "especially alarming" the public statements of the former president of the Port Authority (APC) and the CHS, Adrián Ángel Viudes, who said that the El Gorguel project was the currency of exchange offered by the Valencian MEP Esteban González Pons to Ramón Luis Valcárcel so that he would become a European parliamentarian and so that Cartagena would not become a serious competitor of the Port of Valencia.

To this must be added the unjustifiable resistance of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to grant the project the declaration of "strategic for reasons of first order", something fundamental to go to the EU with guarantees.

In addition, after learning that the Port of Valencia is studying installing a dry port in the Region, entities such as Coec, Croem, or Fremm, have warned of the need to strengthen the union and support for the project of the new dock of containers in El Gorguel because otherwise it would be a detriment to the future of the port of Cartagena.

"Now that the candidate for mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has asked for this statement when her party has slowed her down in recent years is something deeply opportunistic, dishonest and hypocritical," says Manuel Padín.

"Through this initiative," clarifies Manuel Padín, "in no case do we express any opposition to the Escombreras project, we believe that both can be compatible and represent a major step forward for Cartagena in the storage and transportation of bulk and merchandise."

Despite this, the orange spokesman argues that the possibilities of El Gorguel are greater and should be the priority, being able to move up to four million containers against a million containers maximum that would house Escombreras, whose growth is limited and has several reports of unfavorable economic returns.

For Cs, the protection of the environment must be put before the construction of this or any other infrastructure, more if we take into account that, in this case, it would affect the Sierra de la Fausilla, protected by the declaration ZEPA, LIC and Red Natura 2000 and when its fauna and flora are several endemic species in serious danger of extinction.

While the projects arrive, other measures

On the other hand, the motion of Citizens has requested that the Government of Spain be urged to study other complementary measures such as the authorization of new port spaces to market and put into service the important areas currently in disuse of the Port Authority of Cartagena, the necessary development of the ZAL of Cartagena and the relocation of the Franco Warehouse and a study to complete the intermodality of the whole with a Dry Port that can be integrated into the network of dry ports Murcia-Almería called to be large feeders of the Mediterranean Corridor.

In addition, Cs recalls that the energy sector is the Port's first client, so it should assess their needs and development situation in light of future energy trends (decarbonisation) together with new industrial plans for shippers.

Finally, the orange formation insists on the development of the RO.RO and Reefer, lines of the western Mediterranean and north of Africa and with the United Kingdom and the North Sea for refrigerated products.
