Cartagena will adapt to climate change by installing pergolas that will connect green areas (30/01/2019)

This Wednesday, January 30, a regional technical meeting of the working group of the Life Adaptate Project has been held in Cartagena, of which the City of Cartagena is a beneficiary and which aims, with partners from Latvia, Portugal and Spain, to develop a pilot project to connect green areas with measures to adapt to climate change within the city.

This initiative is financed with European Funds.

Remember that in 2018, the City of Cartagena adhered to the Covenant of Mayors for energy and climate, with the commitment to make an action plan for climate and sustainable energy, which is currently in the process of development.

The councilor of the Public Services Area, Juan Pedro Torralba, has attended this meeting and stressed the need to "adapt to climate change, something that is not easy, but the situation requires it."

In the case of Cartagena, the Life Adaptate pilot project will consist of connecting green areas around the Severo Ochoa plaza, through pergolas that will create shadow zones

This way, there will be a pedestrian promenade with bike lanes, native trees and green roofs, which will offer neighbors a friendly environment to walk and live together.

Soon will be convened in Cartagena a conference in which municipal experts and interest groups to define the lines of the future Climate Change Adaptation Plan of the municipality.

Along with the councilman and Cartagena technicians, today's meeting was attended by Rafael Ataz, head of European programs of the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia, and representatives of the municipalities of Lorca and Águilas.

In Águilas, there will be a forested area with drip irrigation from water coming from a wastewater treatment plant to avoid wasting water.

In the municipality of Lorca, shadow corridors will be installed in the busy areas of the Casco Antiguo.

Not only there are actions of the Life Adaptate Project in the Region of Murcia but also in three municipalities of Portugal and Latvia.

In the Latvian municipality of Smiltene, the objective is to recover the artificial lake 'Vidusezers'.

In the Portuguese municipalities of Mértola and Alfândenga da Fè, a natural lake will be built and shade areas with renewable energies will be installed to combat climate change.

In short, what is intended is to reduce the use of cars and encourage walking on foot;

the use of bicycles and public transport.

This will be contaminating less and emitting less CO2 into the atmosphere: a challenge in which all citizens are involved.
