Cs defends the creation of municipal spaces to stimulate the vocation for the Stem professions at an early age (28/01/2019)

- "Not only do we want to promote and awaken interest in these subjects in our students, but we also want to make women more visible and valued to combat the sexist stereotypes that are largely responsible for a deep deficit in their presence in careers and works Stem ", explained the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín

Cartagena, Monday, January 28.

One of the strategic objectives of Citizens in Cartagena has been and is to encourage research, technology, science among young Cartagena, with special attention to women who despite the demonstrated competence in educational curricula do not bet to study scientific careers , "an anomaly that we are willing to correct," says the local spokesman of Cs, Manuel Padín, who recalled that "among our proposals for the Strategic Employment Plan include programs Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) or Steam (including Arts) ".

"Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see how the municipal plans end up forgotten, betrayed and accumulating dust in some dark corner of the City Council so it is often necessary to push them through a specific initiative," said the orange spokesman who has announced that its Municipal Group will defend in the Plenary the creation of municipal Steam spaces with talks and workshops in collaboration with the UPCT, ISEN, or CEEIC among other related entities, "to promote and awaken interest in these subjects at an early age, and in as far as possible, making women visible and valued so that their decisions are not conditioned by sexist stereotypes. "

The orange training recalls that the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) recently presented the results of a study on scientific vocations in which the impact of dissemination actions was measured in terms of promotion of scientific-technological vocations.

The study concluded that after participating in activities, 5.63% of students showed more interest in studying Steam subjects and that in the case of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the number increased to 9.5%.

"One of the conclusions of this study worried us in CS because the actions failed to impact both girls and boys, so we believe it is important to include the gender perspective in the programs carried out by the City of Cartagena if we manage to take our proposal forward, "said Manuel Padín.

Citizens also highlights the great concern that exists in the academic world for the inclusion of women in the Stem careers and their low presence in linked work, "the recommendations of Unesco in this regard are clear: they require public administrations and agencies the development of stimulus policies, the scientific and technical future of our country can not afford to lose the talent of almost half of its population. "

On the other hand, Ciudadanos believes necessary the creation of a work platform in which different educational agents, companies, social agents and public administrations participate to coordinate Stem promotion work.

Finally, Cs believes that it is essential to make available to public groups the public resources of municipal laboratories underutilized at some dates, the creation of manufacturing laboratories (FabLab), the training of coordinators to encourage the use of these resources, and those that exist in schools after an agreement with the Community, "all that is within our reach," says Padin who asks that the Community be urged to provide teaching materials and resources that implement in the classroom active methodologies in STEM areas and establish alliances with other institutions, educational or strategic of our environment "that help to enhance the objectives of this area of knowledge".
