1,500 Secondary students attend the national project "I want to be an engineer" in Murcia (22/01/2019)

The Víctor Villegas Auditorium, in Murcia, was filled this Tuesday with Secondary Education students from institutes throughout the Region.

1,500 young people attend the gala of the national project 'I want to be an engineer', which develops the Polytechnic University of Cartagena to show feminine references in the sector and promote scientific-technical vocations.

"Engineering and women are two connected worlds", the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, assured at the beginning of the gala that engineering "will win a lot because of the commitment of female talent".

Díaz Morcillo explained that the objective of this project is to "break false roles, stereotypes" and bring the world of engineering to women.

"The women who chose to dedicate themselves to Engineering do not regret", he pointed out.

The Rector stressed that he is the defender of each person "study what he wants", but "it is essential to convince girls of the fascinating engineering careers," he said adding that "the fundamental thing is that they like it, if we know how to explain it, we discover that engineering and architectures are fascinating and full of rewards. "

In that sense, he has insisted on the attractiveness of these races, which have a "residual unemployment".

"We need the majority of the population to be present in the technological change."

This has been stated by the Secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, who has been "worried" because designs of robotics and artificial intelligence "are reproducing the stereotypes of men and women;

the only way to neutralize this is to have future engineering student girls. "

The Minister of Education, Adela Martínez-Cachá, has related her experience as an Agronomist and has said that an Engineering "helps you to be able to face problems and find solutions".

"I wanted to make breakthrough decisions and that's what I did," he said before adding that he chose to study engineering, despite his father telling him it was a difficult race in which there were only men.

"No stereotype should make a girl not think about that option and decide to be what she wants.

That no girl in the Region stops getting a dream, "he added.

The project 'I want to be an engineer', promoted and financed by the Institute for Women and Equal Opportunities of the State Secretariat for Equality with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia, focuses in the promotion of technological vocations.

The UPCT is one of the six Spanish universities selected to develop this project and Murcia has become the first city to organize an event of this national project.

After the gala there is a science and engineering fair, as well as the exhibitions 'Discovering Women Scientists', of the Seneca Foundation;

and the 'Hidden Mathematics', by Santi García Cremades.

They have also organized three scientific shows, one of the UPCT-Bloopbuster, the talk of Santi García Cremades 'They will not lie to you if you do not want' and the demonstration of science '+ 100CIA', by David Meseguer.
