At the end of 2018, the data offered by the Regional Athletics Federation (FAMU) about the percentage of clubs and licenses by location, show a clear 'domain' of Cartagena as a municipality with greater implementation of this sport.
In spite of this, its municipal track of athletics, which welcomes hundreds of athletes since it was inaugurated in 1987, is in an important state of abandonment on the part of public institutions.
That is why MC Cartagena considers, in the words of its councilor and sports director, Ricardo Segado, that "the athletics track is already in. It is the criterion that we will defend during these months in the opposition and from June, if the Cartagena give us their confidence, from the Government ".
MC has denounced that the Cartagena Athletics Club, along with the rest of the clubs and users that use the facility, only receives evasiveness and rejection by the local Executive in its logical claims to remodel a track that exceeds three decades of life.
"It is an infrastructure that supports a very high use, with more than five hundred athletes training and competing on a daily basis, located in the urban center of the city, with an area of influence of around 100,000 people," said the mayor .
An installation with significant deficiencies
Last season hosted fifteen championships, three of them nationwide, which passed more than two thousand athletes.
Likewise, it also hosted many school events such as the local athletics league as well as technification days organized by the regional federation (FAMU), with an occupation of 27 weekends during the year.
Currently, there are sixteen athletics clubs that use, in one way or another, the track, which account for 22.3% of the regional total, making Cartagena the city with the highest representation.
In the same way, this entails a quarter of the FAMU's licenses in 2018.
However, Segado regretted that "despite all these data, it has important deficiencies such as a meeting room, waiting areas and indoor stands or multipurpose rooms."
Therefore, the head of Sports of MC has considered that "the time has come to seek funds for the athletic track is remodeled and modernized. We have real champions who have to train in undesirable conditions. The prairie, as well as the other specific improvements that have been announced, are necessary but clearly insufficient. We must think further and, despite the fact that the local government has already informed the club that it does not play, we think so. the economic implication of all administrations ".
In this sense, Ricardo Segado has valued the need for both the Higher Council of Sports, through its Secretary of State, as well as the Directorate General of Sports of the Autonomous Community and the City Council, "to square a project, which we know, there are already ideas and proposals on it, and provide it with a budget to start work in 2019. It is about establishing the athletics track as a national reference, already named by its athletes, not because of its infrastructure " .
Finally, the councilor stressed that "Cartagena must be able to continue organizing championships at all levels and that all people who travel to our city are amazed by the excellent facilities we have, modern and well-cared for. This commitment must become a priority for those responsible for the Government who arrive this year at the Town Hall, of course, MC will bet for it ".
