Defense selects again UPCT to investigate new bulletproof vests (02/01/2019)

The Ministry of Defense has selected a project of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) to develop a new concept in systems of passive protection of the combatant, that is, bulletproof vests.

It is the second consecutive call that the UPCT is selected by the General Direction of Armament and Material to investigate with new materials that improve the resistance of the impact.

The project, called PANTERA: "Antiballistic Protections of Tactical Nanocomposites with High Performance and Adaptability", is led by the Chair of Chemical Engineering of the UPCT, Beatriz Miguel, and in which the companies Fábrica Española de Confecciones Sociedad Anónima (FECSA) and Borchers Sociedad Anónima;

the research groups QUIMYTEC, Electromagnetism and Materia (GEM) and the Materials Characterization Laboratory for underwater acoustics.

It also has the support of the General Albacete and Fuster Marine Infantry School (EIMGAF) and other first line units of the Spanish Armed Forces.

FECSA, based in Madrid, is a Spanish company at the technological forefront of the European textile industrial sector.

Brochers, based in Gernika, is a national importer and distributor of the main brands of products related to hunting and shooting.

Three research groups of the UPCT, two companies and the General Albacete and Fuster Marine Infantry School (EIMGAF) participate in this interdisciplinary research.

The call, from the Directorate General of Armament and Material, finances business and scientific projects of interest for the Defense, within the scope of the Cooperation Program in Scientific Research and Development in Strategic Technologies (COINCIDENTE Program) ".

Other projects financed in this call are linked to energy weapons using high-power lasers, robotics applied to military missions, cyberdefense, detection of improvised explosive devices and warning and protection against NRBC threats (Nuclear, Radiological, Biological and Chemical), among others.

The General Directorate of Armament and Material depends on the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense and is responsible for the planning and development of the armament policy and material of the department, as well as the supervision and direction of its execution.
