The UPCT will study the polluting emissions of the cruise ships in the Port of Cartagena (28/12/2018)

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) will direct two of the three projects of environmental interest that the Port Authority will finance during the next year 2019 through the Chair of the Port Authority and the Campus Mare Nostrum.

They will study the air pollution generated by the cruise ships that dock in Cartagena and the polymers and microplastics present in the Port.

The 'Assessment of the impact of emissions to the atmosphere of the cruises of the dock of Cartagena: Pilot study of marine pollution', the project that will direct the researcher José María Moreno Grau, of the area of Technologies of the Environment, will have a financing of 13,722 euros

The researcher Javier Bayo Bernal, also from the area of Environmental Technologies, will have 14,200 euros for the study 'Analysis, distribution, sources and destination of microplastic polymers in the docks of Cartagena, Escombreras and Cala Cortina'.

In addition, the professor of the University of Murcia José Antonio García Chartón will study with 15,000 euros the 'Role of the docks and dams of the Port of Cartagena for the recruitment of juveniles and as an adult habitat for fish with rocky bottoms'.

These research contracts give continuity to those carried out in previous years by researchers from public universities in the Region.

Professor Antonio Guerrero, from the area of Systems Engineering and Automation, has measured during 2018, in collaboration with the Naval Technology Center, impulsive noises in the Bay of Cartagena that occur episodically during work in the Port, to know how affect marine species.

In the same line, in 2017, researchers from the Polytechnic Javier Gilabert, from the Ecology area, and José Luis Sancho, from Signal Theory and Communications, designed and tested a transportable and autonomous underwater acoustic monitoring system to control noise submarines.

Scholarships and awards

On the other hand, the Chair for the third consecutive year, has convened four professional initiation scholarships associated with environmental activities of the Port Authority, as well as awards for Final Degree Projects and Final Master Projects presented at the UPCT and the UMU with themes environmental

The Port Authority of Cartagena has set among its strategic objectives to be excellent in port management and Joaquín Segado "respect for the environment is one of the main axes of the work we do in the Port, we devote significant efforts to its protection as the improvement of water quality, conservation of the natural environment, optimization of consumption, actions of forest improvement or reduction of its ecological footprint, "says the president of the institution.
