The Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena celebrates Christmas with guided tours and an exhibition (21/12/2018)

The Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena, whose patronage is part of the Community, offers this Christmas guided tours for the whole family with 'Merry Christmas, Bona Saturnalia', which will know how the Romans celebrated the Saturnalia festivals, which coincide in time with Christmas.

Visitors will begin their guided tour with an introduction about the traditions and customs of the Saturnalia festivities.

Next, there will be a tour through the rooms of the museum, where they will discover more details of the festivities by Augusto himself, who was excited to make gifts of the most diverse Saturnalia.

The activity will end at the Roman Theater, where visitors will be invited to sing a Christmas carol and test the acoustics of the building.

Saturnalia was celebrated in honor of Saturn, god of agriculture.

They began on December 17 with a festive public feast (lectisternium) and, at the multitudinous cry of "Io, Saturnalia", candles were lit (cerei) to celebrate the end of the darkest period of the year and the birth of the new period of light.

These Roman holidays were celebrated with large banquets and it was traditional to make gifts such as candles, clay figurines, bags with nuts and even money.

The typical dessert that was eaten during these festivities were the buns with honey, inside which a 'bean' was hidden.

The lucky one who had the 'bean' in his cup was crowned as 'Princeps Saturnalicius', and the others had to obey his orders.

The activity is aimed at the public from four years, at 11:30 am, from December 22 to January 5, except for the 25 and the 1 that the museum will remain closed.

For more information and reservation: 968 50 48 02 and 968 50 00 93. The ticket costs three euros, and can be purchased online https://www.cartagenapuertodeculturas.com/detalle_actividades.asp?id=334&pagina=1).

The illustrations are by the artist from Cartagena, Margarita Ariza, whose originals - in a mixed technique of ink, watercolor, acrylic and collage - form part of the exhibition.

On Wednesday, December 26, at 12:30, there will be a guided tour conducted by the artist from Cartagena Margarita Ariza and the author of the story, also Cartagena Javier Tonda, who has worked for years in artistic and educational projects for children .

The exhibition opened yesterday will remain open until January 14.
