The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón and the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, signed on Tuesday, December 18, the agreement by which the City of Cartagena contributes to the financing of the restoration of the facades Main and side of the church of Santa Maria de Gracia with 300,000 euros.
Restoration work has already begun and was scheduled to be completed before Holy Week in 2019, but due to issues that have arisen, it may be delayed.
The total budget amounts to 1,085,587 euros, of which the City of Cartagena will provide 300,000 euros;
the Bishopric will contribute with 485.587 euros and the Autonomous Community of Murcia with another 300.000 euros.
The rehabilitation project includes the recovery of the main façade, where the four existing niches will be re-installed until the middle of the last century and where it is planned to place a new one for an image of the Virgin, so it is likely that the original project.
In addition, these works will be used to complete the bell tower of the church.
The mayor stressed that the City Council was clear from the outset that he should collaborate on this project, since the church of Santa Maria de Gracia has a key role in our Holy Week as it is the temple from which they leave and to which they return the most of the Cartagena processions.
"In addition, it is part of the religious and cultural heritage of our municipality and our obligation is to protect it," said the mayor.
For his part, the bishop thanked the mayor for her collaboration and support in this initiative.
