The Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC) of the City of Cartagena has issued several tips for consumers when making Christmas purchases online safely, as these holidays are one of the dates of the year in which more online transactions are carried out.
The Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC), dependent on the government area run by Carmen Martín del Amor, reminds that it is possible to enjoy these holidays in a responsible, reasonable, sustainable and supportive manner, so that the forecast of expenses in the purchases and the responsibility of our consumption habits these days they become essential elements.
The OMIC has put the accent on several aspects that the consumer must take into account when buying online:
- The identification of the seller: the e-commerce companies that operate in Spain have the legal obligation to publish on their web page the data referring to their corporate name, CIF, postal address and contact information.
However, on platforms such as eBay or similar, where transactions are made between individuals, it is important to look at the seller's ratings and the opinions of other users.
Knowing your reputation provides some guarantee of how the purchase process will be carried out.
- The secure transaction: when you buy online you must take the same security precautions as when doing banking, ie use secure connections and have security software or antivirus installed on the device from which you make the purchase.
Before entering banking information on any website it is necessary to verify that you have a recognized security certificate.
In the upper bar of the browser, where the URL of the web page is placed, the http: // must be transformed into https: // if the buyer's data is being encrypted and, therefore, is protected.
- The form of payment: since the General Law for the Defense of Consumers and Users prohibits the collection of additional charges for the use of a specific payment method.
The online store must give the option to pay in the way that suits us, without this implying an extra cost.
-The terms and conditions of delivery, which must be specified during the purchase process.
Otherwise, the user should know that the maximum delivery time of a product purchased through the Internet is 30 days.
If the seller can not fulfill the promised period, he has the obligation to notify him and the consumer can decide if he goes ahead with the operation or if he gives up, without additional cost.
In this case, the seller is obliged to immediately return the money.
- On returns and withdrawal, the OMIC states that in case of any incident with any product, consumers can withdraw from the purchase within 14 days after receipt of the product without justification.
- Guarantees, because when purchased online, the products are protected by the same guarantees as if they had been purchased in a store or physical store.
- Claims, for which the OMIC recommends resolving them through the seller's customer service or at the Municipal Consumer Information Office.
- Excessive bargains, since "ridiculously attractive" prices can be an error or fraud.
Even if the consumer pays, if he has not received the purchased product, the merchant could try to paralyze the buying and selling process explaining that it has been a misunderstanding.
In this case, the buyer has the option to sue him before the consumer authorities and present his case pending the verdict of the competent authority.
