The House of the Child celebrates a century.
The institution and the traditional raffle associated with it are celebrating this 2018 and, is that, 100 years is a figure to commemorate.
With this premise has started the act for the centenary of the House of the Child, which was held on Wednesday, December 12, in the Hall of Ceremonies of the Palace Hall.
An appointment to which the mayor has gone, Ana Belén Castejón;
the official chronicler of Cartagena Luis Miguel Pérez Adán;
and the president of the Casa del Niño Foundation and Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, who took part during the celebration of the commemorative act.
Municipal councilors of the different political groups have also wanted to be present at this event.
As the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, recalled, this institution was created to help the most needy of the municipality, at that time they were children.
So a raffle was established with which to raise funds to help the little ones.
It was in February 1918 when a number was raffled for the first time.
Over the years these needs changed, children already have Laws, Rights and institutions that protect them and the scope of action of these funds has been allocated to other causes and social needs.
Castejón has made a special recognition to all the councilors who passed through this Department and who promoted measures to preserve and promote this entity.
The raffle complied with and complies with a double avenue of assistance because in addition to serving to raise funds for people with needs, it provides a job to the vendors of the coupons, who must meet specific requirements to cover this position, which is reserved for a person with special needs.
As indicated by the mayor of Social Services and president of the Foundation, Mercedes García, the campaign chosen to promote this centenary has this double avenue of help as a protagonist and in it you can read '100 years, from Child to Child' along with the image of Pepe, a retired seller, giving a coupon to a minor.
On the other hand, the chronicler of the municipality, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, has made a review of what these 100 years have been for the institution and has illustrated it with historical images.
As explained by Pérez Adán, the Local Board for the Protection of Children in Cartagena was created with the aim of preventing children from being on the streets or begging, and many of the children of the municipality worked from an early age.
In this context, Casa del Niño emerged as a place of food assistance, cleaning and even for children to have a place to sleep.
In order to offer these services, a building was built under the assistance of Víctor Beltrí, who is also celebrating his anniversary this year.
On the initiative of Felix Martin Alpera, in January 1918 it was decided to make the first raffle, which was finally drawn in February of that same year, currently about 2,000 coupons are sold daily for the draw.
During the development of the event has paid tribute to the retired vendors, who have been given a commemorative ceramic as a thank you for their work and delivery "to make this a more just society," as indicated by the mayor.
The retired seller and image of the commemorative poster, José María Berruezo, has dedicated some moving words about the evolution of the institution.
In the same way, they have been given some identification cards and commemorative badges to the sellers currently in active service.
